My dog is 12 now, and picking up some odd habits. Sometimes he barks at me for attention but refuses to come over. Then when I go to him, he lays down and looks bitter. Also l think, he's starting to make sighing/grunting sounds when he thinks I'm listenning. He doesn't do it, when I'm not in the room. Maybe it's just me...

He is probably feeling his age. His dog age would be comparable with someone who is in their seventies, while physically he maybe able to still do things, it may hurt sometimes. Compare him with a Senior Citizen, who gets around pretty well, but still has occasional aches and pains, and gets a little bit out of sorts.

Yes, some of them do develop odd habits as they age. And I've had a couple of dogs in advanced old age who have developed what would be Alzheimer's disease in a human. You might do a physical checkup, just to be on the safe side, just in case he has arthritis or some physical cause which is bothering him.

your dog is getting on in years sure . he may be grumpy as he might have sore bones and all different aches and pains that come with old age. i don't know what size he is but a big dog 12 is old for a small dog its old too but they tend to live longer
if you can afford it have a vet check him out . if not then
i can tell you that over the years since i was a boy i had dogs and the vets always told me aspirin plain aspirin only that not Tylenol just aspirin was a good thing to give the older dogs.
this helps with sore joints and well all the different things .
try to keep your dog active take him for walks every day he might walk slower but its still good for him in many ways.
if your in a warm place swimming in warm water is fantastic for them.
as for the sounds sure he might make them sort talking to you sometimes now it is better if you go to him and give him pats on the floor and rub his back legs and joints a massage sort of but
as long as you pay attention to him and walk him touch him and all each day you will know if he is in pain too much pain at least .
again the aspirin is fine one tablet normal ones adult dose for a large dog even two one in the morning and one later at supper.
for a small dog i mean a real small dog use baby aspirin same thing one or two. each day. ps when you take him for a walk if he sits down or lies down and you ask him to come on or walk on abit and he does not want to follow just let him rest sit with him
please do that .

LIke old people, their bodies and brains age, wear out, and break down. The aging process is the flip side of the growing process. It's life on this planet. Look in the mirror. I'm sure you are different than you were 12 years ago.

If you aren't there to hear it, how do you know he isn't making noise?

Old dogs get cranky. So do old people. things hurt all the time.
Has he had a Senior health workup? Try a good quality Senior dog food with glucosamine, if you haven't already. Maybe something to ease his arthritis.

I suppose they are just like us .We have good and bad days too.Just give him a hug and a throw about with a ball and he should be happy again. If you think you dogs personality has really changed take him to the vet as he might be sick or just tired with old age.Get him checked so you know you are doing your best for him.

Old dogs eyesight and hearing goes bad just as humans do. dogs will also get the same probles as old people get and do not like to be bothered at times. Just take everything in stride. and remember your dog is no longer a puppy

Not usually. He probobly acts in such a manor because his joints are sore. My elder dog did the same, but we had to put him down because he soon after got cancer.

I think that they seem cranky because their senses are failing. Things aren't what they used to be and it's confusing to them. He wants to be close to you because he loves and trusts you...he needs to know you are there so he feels safe. Give him lots of TLC.

Then tend to get a bit senile and cranky. They dont like to be disturbed when they are trying to sleep. Just give him lots of love and snuggles, he will be happy.
