i want to run with my dog. She is a black lab/collie mix and very energetic. Will it hurt her if i run say 2 miles with her? Will it damage her joints or bones?

Because we don't know your dog's medical history, we cannot make any difinitive statements about what she can endure and what she cannot.

However, generally, dogs enjoy and benefit from a good run. It strengthens the heart and musculature, helps to increase bone density, and increases oxygenation.

If you're concerned that the runs might be debilitating for your dog, start out with short runs and work up to longer ones, and make sure you get your dog to her vet every 3 - 4 months to have her bones and joints checked.

YES! This sort of exercise is great fo her. However, just to be safe, have you vet examine her hips (even her other joints). Build up her endurance slowly untill she can run the entire distance wih you. Be sure not to run her after she eats, to prevent bloat. (Wait a good two hours at least) Talk to your vet about putting her on glucosamine or other joint supplement

Unlike Salsa said, just because she is a mixed breed does not mean that you do not have to worry about hip dysplasia or other joint problems. Labs and collies both frequently suffer from hip and elbow dysplasia which can be passed on to the young, eveen if she is cross bred. Have your vet check for these

no. its great for her, in fact she could do up to 5-10 miles with you, depending on how fit she is. dogs are encredibly athletic and it will only do good. Unless she was a pure bred, which she isn't youy also wouldn't have 2 worry about her hips. In fact my dog had a torn ligament repaired and she still runs with us.

You are not going to want to START her with a two mile run. Build up to that if she has not had a lot of physical activity before this point.

A healthy dog can run two miles with no problem.

No - it won't as long as your dog is eighteen months of age or older. If not then I suggest long walks until then.

All the best, Witters.

Absolutely not....it's good for her. If she's been fairly inactive up to this point you might want to ease her into it. Start out slow and watch her for signs of discomfort.
