former natives called taino indians called it Boriken which spanish translates to Borinquen colombus called san juan de bautista and called what now is san juan Puerto Rico because it was a "rich port" but later the goverment changed the name to la isla de puerto rico and the name of the capital to san juan

It was called Borinken by the Taino Indians but when the Spanish came they named it San Juan Bautista and Puerto Rico was the name of the capital but then they changed San Juan as the capital and Puerto Rico as the country.

the natives of puerto rico (they were the Taíno) called teh island Borikén or Borinquen. that's where boricua came as a synonym for puerto riccan. Columbus gave the island the name San Juan Bautista...i'm not sure how it came to be known as Puerto Rico
