Alright, come on, there are rude people all over the world. And it's funny how some people have christened the people of city as phony when every city has its share of phony people. I was born and raised in L.A. but recently moved to the northern side of California. Aside from all of the crime and such, I love it because it's simply where I'm from. Being that you'll be a tourist, you aren't familiar with the surroundings and won't know what to expect. So I think you'll enjoy yourself because they'll be so much for you to see and do. However, for its natives (such as myself), it's nothing new. Beware of gang turf though and become familiar as far as certain areas to avoid.
Have fun!

The cost of housing is too expensive here. If you want just a place to hang and be cool while you are single, take a date to the third street promenade.
You can go to the Santa Monica Pier afterward.
Beverly Hills is as rich as you heard. It is also expensive to even buy a drink there.
Traffic is always a consideration where ever you go. Expect to pay for parking.
If you are in to boos the UCLA book fair in the spring is the best in the nation.
There are three amusement parks. They are all day affairs. Disney Land, Knotts berry farm, and Magic Mountain.

LA is ok, The beaches like Venice is a sight to see the freaky people, but for the real Calif experience you need to go south to such places as Newport Beach, Laguna Beach(Orange County) & SanDiego(2hrs south from LA). California is full of various scenes and experiences. Once done with the coast, go to the mountains only 2hrs away! Big Bear or Lake Arrowhead in the east from Orange County or the sierras (Yosemite) which is Central Calif. There is so much!

Are you actually planning to go to downtown LA? Or are you going to one of the many cities around it? Los Angeles county is HUGE and covers alot of ground. When you see pictures of down town Los Angeles it looks big, but the actual area of the buildings is pretty small. Not the best area to stay in (downtown LA). It does have some amazing architecture on the buildings and is definately a great place to visit. One can find any kind of food here too.. whatever you desire, you can find.

You come to Los Angelels ofr the weather. It is 45 square miles. It has a very divergent population of about 3.5 million. Study the city and its different neighbor "hoods."

Too much traffic

Very expensive and salaries don't match
Not very pretty (no foliage, dirty beaches)
