AFTER I DRIVE THE CAR ON A LONG STRECTH, THEN I COME TO A STOP IT STALLS! IS THERE ANYWAY OF ME FIXING IT WITHOUT HAVING TO TAKE IT TO A MECHANIC?

They engine light was on I cleaned the front 02 sensors which the auto parts store made as a suggestion - then I reset the memory and the light went off however it is still stalling - I am going to try and change the fuel filter and see if that works. The car does have an anti theft device.

As speeddemon asks, what were the codes? If P0340 was one of them, you need to replace your cam sensor & synchronizer. The symptom you describe would certainly be caused by the aforementioned parts along with a squeaking sound EXTREMELY similar to a belt squeel. This failure is caused by sludge inside the body of the synchronizer causing it to seize up, and not move freely. THIS APPLIES ONLY TO 3.0L OHV ENGINES ONLY.

Could be very many things. Too many things to guess at wtihout having further detail. But i have a Ford ZX2. It was stalling like that, after it would warm up and i would come up to a stop light it would stall out every now and then. Turned out to be the Crankshaft Position Sensor (or was that the Camshaft Position Sensor?-I forget which now. ) At any rate it was just a small part that costs 20 bucks.
But really, without further info it could be alot of things causing your problem. Anything from a clogged fuel filter to something worse.
Here is an idea. Pull into an Auto Zone or similar auto parts store. They will bring out one of those hand-held computer gizmos that they can hook it up to the car and sometimes tell you what your problem might be. They do this for free, they might be able to help you.

It can be due to many things. and you did not mention any lights coming on such as the engine light, or does the car have anti theft devices.
It appears from your question that the engine stalls as you take off your foot from the gas as you wind the speed down to almost zero, then the problem is in the idling.
Did you forget maintenance- tune ups, oil, air, fuel and gas filter replacements.
Maybe its been a long time since they were done. try the basics first.

A small investment up front could save you lots of money in the long run. Buy one of the tools that reads your cars computer to dignose problems. That will tell you what the engine computer thinks is wrong and narrow down the search. Even if you end up having to go to a mechanic, the information the tool gives you helps you make sure the mech don't take you for a ride.

So what's happening is when the car goes into idle the revs of the engine are suffering causing the car to shake; if the revs get too low the car will stall. When the car is in idle it releases a small amount of strain on the engine, this can be seen in the increase in revs stopping the shaking of the engine block and consequently the car. The likely cause of this however can be found in either a blocked fuel line or fuel filter, as i have experienced this in a older land rover discovery. Other wise take out your spark plugs and see if there is any carbon build up (which looks like black on the tips of the spark plugs) and brush them with a metal brush. If all fails, take it to a professional.

I always try cheapest easiest things first. Then let mech handle it with list of what has been done.

Change out air filter, spark plugs, plug wires because at 6 years they are due. Add dry gas / engine cleaner to your engine next 3 fill ups. go for the more expensive stuff (5-10 dollars a bottle)See if it helps. Who knows if if it really works, but some people say it will. Still cheaper than a trip to mech......

Then go to to mech, if you need gas filter changed (unless you can do yourself) and tell them what you've done so you don't get billed for work you've done and what your problems are. He may clean your injection system, adjust throttle cable due to stretching, adjust car's computer etc...

P.S. Other noteworthy unrelated maintenence includes tranny flush and radiator flush if not done in last 30,000 miles.

Check the pcv hose for intake leaks, you might have to re-calibrate the computer on the car
