Because first off, its stupid that its illegal. Were filling the prisons with non violent people who smoke marijuana. Were more worried about that then people killing other people, raping women, etc. When you watch Cops, the most you see is people getting pulled over, they either get arrested on the spot, or they run and crash and get arrested for possession. Its stupid. Alcohol is more deadly then Marijuana. You rarely if ever, (I personally havent), hear of someone crashing and killing someone, or murdering someone, or raping someone, when their high. But you hear alot about people doing that when their drunk.
So basically, people are campaigning to legalize it because its a stupid law that shouldn't exist. I personally don't use it, and never have, but I would vote for the legalization of it when it comes up.

Because the marijuana laws were based on the most ridiculous nonsense you ever heard.
For example, the US Official Expert on marijuana said that marijuana could make your incisors grow six inches long and drip with blood. He testified in court, under oath, that when he tried marijuana, it turned him into a bat. You can find an excellent short history of the subject at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/History/whiteb1.htm
You can find a ton of research on marijuana at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer It includes the full text of the largest goverment commission reports on marijuana ever done. They all concluded that marijuana is not a serious threat to health. They also said that marijuana should have been legalized long ago because the laws do more harm than good.

Because it is ridiculous to prosecute people for having marijuana. Every culture has some sort of hallucinogen; whatever is native to their country. It's mind-altering, yes, but so is alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, sugar, etc. We grew up in an era where all of these things are considered acceptable. Those who lived during the prohibition know what it's like to have what they consider a harmless drug, made illegal. People refused to comply with it, and eventually the government gave up on it. The war on drugs is rather misguided when including marijuana as an illegal drug. The drugs that need to be targeted are the ones that cause a lot of harm in society. More and more people are speaking out about about this. There are many health benefits to marijuana, especially for those who are gravely ill. Hats off to anyone who joins the fight.

I don't know how they consider it "safer" than other forms of recreation. I've smoked the stuff and it's really hard on ones lungs. What's safe about that?
I do see where it is a good thing to have for medicinal reasons, but not smoking it. It comes in pill form as well, called Marinol.
My friend has AIDS and it's been one of the only things that has helped his nausea and vomiting.

First of all, marijuana or hemp had been here since we were not born yet and had been used as a source for pertinent necessities in life, like oil for our lamps, machineries and farms, fiber for clothing, ropes, sail and shoes, and most especially for medicine. Marijuana was and had been researched as relief, for lots of sickness like sleeplessness, asthma,HIV/AIDS, Parkinsons disease, and other diseases. Most of these results had been unknown to us because of the negative feedbacks that were given to the public. There is no overdose and side effects compared to the synthetic drugs used for common illnesses. Like any other things abuse and misinformations about marijuana lead people to believe otherwise.
And finally in th e1800 and early 1900, it was the law for americans and even those immigrants to plant marijuana in their backyard, and the offense for not doing so led them to be penalized and/or incarcerated.

Marijuana is not nearly as bad as cigarettes. I wish people would know what they are talking about. First off it comes from a plant, not billions of chemicals like cigarettes. There is no nicotine so it is NOT addictive. Sure its not great for your lungs, but if it's not going to kill you, why shouldn't a person have their own choice?

It causes less side effects (symptoms of other diseases).

Pharmaceuticals and alcohol are involved in accidents more often than cannabis alone.
It's safer for people to use and if people feel better that are sick when they smoke it, it is effective as a cure that helps with precident of safeness wether the people are helped by the placebo of it's goodness or of it's wellness factor itself.

the cannabis plant competes with the plastics industry, with cannabis plastic, edible food rappers may be a reality.
the cannabis plant competes with nylon and the rope and clothing industry.
The cannabis plant competes with the timber industry as it's fibers glued with its own cellulose can make fiberboard stronger and more durable than wood itself.
Cannabis seed oil is food for people composed of essencial oils they are called essencial because we need them but don't produce enough ourselves. It can feed the hungry.
Cannabis seed oil can be used directly in a diesel engine, in fact Rudolph Diesel designed his engine to run on cannabis seed oil and peanut oil. It competes with the oil industry.
The oil industry by the way controls the other ones that compete with cannabis so they themselves are actually responsible for outlawing gods plant and gift to man.

Marijuana is less dangerous than alcohol. The better question would be, why isn't anyone campaigning to illegalize alcohol?

Probably because alcohol & cigarettes are more harmful than marijuana & they are legal. Why waste taxpayers money on prosecuting people who use marijuana?
