If he can't get a filling to hold in after 3 attempts, would you seriously ask him to place an expensive crown?
Contrary to a post above, I suspect it is a composite (white) filling rather than an amalgam. In my opinion, too many dentists - particularly young ones - rely too much on the adhesive effects of bonded composites and forget to consider additional ways of helping it grip.
I'd politely ask for a refund and then go somewhere else.
BTW, crowns are not always the best solution.

There are always other options. Did he fill the tooth with an amalgam (silver) filling or a resin (tooth colored) filling? An amalgam filling is packed into the tooth. A resin restoration is bonded directly to the tooth. If the filling is silver then it becomes loose fairly easy, depending on the size of the filling. Do you grind or clench your teeth? This can cause fillings to weaken and fall out. It can also cause fractures to the filling and the tooth. Too much treatment on one tooth can also cause trauma to the nerve. This could eventually lead to a root canal. I, myself would look for a second opinion. The filling problem may or may not be caused by the dentist. I would also ask about having a crown placed over the tooth to prevent future filling loss. A little helpfull info: A porcelain crown looks great but the porcelain can fracture. A gold crown may not look good cosmetically but it will last a long time. I have never seen a gold crown that was fractured. If you have a grinding or clenching problem then I would definitely go for the gold. Crowns could last a life time if taken care of.

I think that you need to see another dentist, or tell the one you are seeing to mix more glue into the amalgam :)
Wow, if a filling fell out of me three times, I'd not go back to that dentist :)

If the filling is really large, the best option would be to get a crown, if it is a small conservative filling, there is no reason why it should keep falling out, maybe you could suggest for them to use a different material

I think you have an incompetent Dentist. I would call the local news channel and tell your problem to them if the Dentist gets profiled on the local news, The Dentist will make it right.

The only thing he could do would be to put a crown on it. Thats where he files down the tooth and puts a porcelain (or metal depending on how much you want to spend) tooth on it. They usually last 5 to 10 years, longer if they are well made. And they feel just like the real thing.
