I just took a trip from Conn. to Tenn. and my older sheltie loves the car while my eight month old sheltie drooled all the way there and threw up.I tried the Ginger Snaps but no luck. What I did find was that when I got to Tenn.my girlfriend drove her truck to the agility trial and the crates were up high so the dogs could see out the window.Sting my puppy did not get car sick once nor did he drool. But when I drove home I had rented a car and he could not see out the window so he drooled. But the best news now is he is pretty much over it. They eventually out grow it my vet told me.Hope this helps

Mine do that too.
Last year we went on vacation with the dogs.
Gone for 2 weeks.Drove from Central Illinois to Fort Collins ,Co..After staying a few days we drove straight up into Wyoming and over to South Dakota where we spent another few days taking in all the sights around Mt.Rushmore before heading for home.
Our dogs rode in back of our Tahoe and had a ball.Sleeping in strange hotels almost nightly did'nt phase them one bit.
They were not one bit bored as I brought toys and rawhide chews for them and they had plenty of playroom in the back of the truck. They played everywhere we stopped, running around checking out everything!.They watched the cars and trucks go by on the highway. They had their noses out the window more often than not. They really seemed to enjoy themselves the whole way.
We drove thru the night to get home about 4 a.m..went thru a horrible rainstorm the dogs both slept thru.Evan tho there was alot of thunder and lightening. But a mile from home up they both popped and started begging for the windows to be opened.Seems they were as anxious to get home as we were.
I think it's the smell. We don't notice such things as the scent of the river that runs nearby and the soap at the car wash and the natural gas storage place down the road and all the other stuff they get used to smelling and associating with home.

I wondered the same thing with my dog. I paid attention to when she starts getting ready to get out of the car. I noticed two things. First, she recognizes stuff around home, just like we all do. The odd thing was when we were going places where she was not used to going or even never went to before. I noticed that she settles in for the ride but when I got off exits and started making more turns she would realize we were close to the end of the trip. Think about it. You will make more turns when you are getting to your destination.
I bet smells has a lot to do with it too. I am sure places all have their special smell that dogs "see"

Dogs are alot smarter than we think also they are very intuned to their environment, I just watched a three hour special on animals and their special abilities to know things and sense things we do not. They talked about how animals are extremely intuned to their surroundings as a survival techinque they developed over the years in the wild. How they can sense your emotions, and impending weather. My dog always knows when we are almost home no matter the direction, and the other amazing thing he knows at least 5 to 10 minutes a head a time before one of us comes home no matter the difference of time. I just think their instincts and sixth sense is way stronger than our abilties,

Our little chihuahua that we lost in Sept; was just the same even when we were miles from home in our caravan , or visiting our sons and daughters houses IT WAS UNCANNY! do you think they mind read or what ? it certainly had us baffled we used to wait for him and sure enough out he would jump from under the seat even when we were hundreds of miles from home! We have a 5 month chi puppy now and are wondering if he will do the same.

I don't know. But mine has been to Grandma's house enough times that he undoubtedly knows the way. He spazzes without fail every time we drive through this little "ville" on the way there because he knows it means he is getting close. And when we approach the appartment building? Duck and cover!!! He knows it for sure!

The dog has learned to associate the sound of your vehicle with you. They aren't as stupid as some people think they are. I have raised dogs for years and I have noticed the same thing. Good question.

Your body language changes and they always know when you are about to get home as they will recognise the landscapes, land markings etc.
Their heightened sense of smell also gives them signals.
Hope this helps.

He senses the change in you. They can read things about us that we wouldn't understand and you will give off a signal that the end to the journey is near.
