It's a Jewish way of showing respect for G-d. We believe His Name is holy & worth reverancing, so we never actually write it out with the o. Sorry.

The third commandment adverse to taking god's call in ineffective incorporates both saying god's call in an unholy context and erasing it. If one doesn't write the completed be conscious, yet substitutes a - for a letter, then one has no longer stated the call and for this reason choose no longer project about its being in a nasty context, or erased. I take position to imagine that g-o-d is an English be conscious/call, no longer one among god's names.

As mentioned in another answer then is that some English speaking Jews feel compeled to leave the vowels out of a mention of "G.d" because the vowels were left out of the of יהוה‎ (the tragrammaton),

Wikipedia gives part of the answer but they accidently obscure the important part...

The name given is unpronouncable cause there are no vowels. The priests presumably had the secret teachings.

And indeed we the people are not really supposed to have a name for God in the Hebew Bible.. he/she/it is the great "I am" ..

The English "Yahweh" is an attempt to put some vowels in, but even I feel now that one should be careful with using this name and probably not use it.

These people feel that writing the Name of God should not be done as His is a Holy Name.

And God is not god. Small g means something entirely different!

For many believers of the Hebrew religion this is a way of avoiding writing a name of God, to avoid the risk of the sin of erasing or defacing the name. While it is not forbidden to write the name of God, this is a safeguard.

This is just another thing I respect about the Jewish people.
They revere the name of God to such an extent that they will not spell out His name in reverence to His Holy nature.

And they sure don't give Him a last name like so many I know.

The name G_D is too sacred for many to even write down.

True Christians often call HIM ===THE GOD/JESUS!

Quite different than when referring to a moon god.
In that case the G does not even warrant a capitol G.

His name is sacred and should never be used in vain. The people who write it that way believe that his name can only be used in prayer.

In certain religions one is not supposed to write or even utter his name, certainly that is the case in Judaism so replacing the o with a - gets around it.

I learned something new! No where in Jewish literature is the word God spelled out? You're never to old to learn something new.
