Er. No.

1. "Pagans" include far more than Wiccans (or wiccans or witches), and these other religions (Asatru, Druids, etc.) don't necessarily have "covens"; in fact, I'm pretty sure they don't.

2. A whole LOT of people (particularly younger people and newbies) start with books and stay solitary. Sometimes this is because there are no formal training groups in their area (that they know of, or know how to contact), sometimes it's because they aren't accepted for training, sometimes it's because they don't want to join a group for reasons of their own. Some people are solitary by nature. Some of the newer crop think, mainly because they read it in a book, that there is no value to being coven-trained (that's sad, IMO).

3. Yes, it's not all that easy making contact with a teaching group (coven or grove or whatever). SOME of that is because we don't tend to "advertise" or even give out contact information except in very specialized places. Yes, some of that is due to the expected actions of fundies.

But it's also because we do not evangelize no matter what (at least, Wiccans do not - we are forbidden to).

I do know that when we become silly enough to try advertising events in mundane newspapers and such, we run a big risk of fundies showing up to disrupt and harass.

But I'd say that in the majority of cases, people stay solitary not from fear of Christian reaction, but because of the reasons I listed above in #2.

Actually, I went solitary because I was sick of dealing with other Pagans using religion as an excuse to act like drunken sluts and telling me I wasn't a "real" Pagan because I don't drink or didn't agree with something. I've never had a Christian try to interfere with a coven, or very small gathering, mostly, I think because they don't believe we're real. Though they have tried to interfere with large public gatherings, like Pagan Pride day and make really obnoxious scenes. But most of the other Christians are really embarrassed by this sort of behavior. I'm not entirely solitary, I still go to the really big family-friendly gatherings.

Paganism has no requirement that pagans form groups, it is a spiritual path which can be done by ones self, though having a group dynamic is a wonderful thing which can lead to a far greater understanding of the craft.

A goodly number of the pagans out there today have come to it by way of, sorry to say the influence of movies and TV shows as well as those who have read a book and decided they were pagan. Most who come to the craft by that route don't believe they need a coven.

Years ago there were not a lot of books on the subject of Paganism and Wicca, so the only way that a person could learn about it was either trial and error on their own or by finding an already established group/coven.

Since Wicca is a recognized religion in the U.S., it is protected by law and with that power we who are Wiccan will not allow ourselves to go quietly to the stake.

I don't understand how you can ask such a question when Paganism is rampant in the "Christian" church - take a look at the Catholic Church and then read the Holy Bible's viewpoint on praying to idols, calling no man Father, bringing detestable things into your home, setting up Christmas trees on the altar of the Lord, celebrating the exact same rituals as the pagans, worshiping God in the same way they worship their gods, dipping eggs, mistletoe, the catherderal sits right in the middle of a sundial in Rome, see how many violations they have against God's Word! Paganism- going solitary is a joke, it's right out in public view for all to see! But it's true what Jesus said; "There are none so blind as those that will not see!

Well.
I have seen marches on both temples and groves. I have seen the children of the one god burn temples and cut down groves. They are not all civilized towards us.
Most EBfs (earth based faiths) are faiths, not religions. we don't really need the leadership of Priests or Priestesses. We follow the faith of our spirits in the way our spirits lead us and that is generally quit comfortable. Few are registered and few really care to be. There are those that would rather live unseen because of the two laws that still exist under Christian and Muslim rule, Those are "Suffer not the witches and kill them" and the fact that they are still allowed to keep slaves.
We are working on an EBF temple where all are welcome to come no matter the faith and learn in their own way. we will be fair and allow open discovery of our faith so that there might be a little more understanding. There will be christians allowed in the temple and if they do start something the police will be contacted.
If this model fails and the temple gets damaged or taken over, All earth based faiths will know exactly how tolerant christians are.
En Tis Blethec. Blessed be.

No, I think that most pagans go solitary because spirituality is a highly individual thing, and the odds of finding a large group of people who are following the same spiritual path are not very high.

Perhaps in some places. I don't know about most pagans, but I'm solitary because there's not a coven in my area, and no other reason.

No, it's to do with self belief and confidence in making their own decisions. Most pagans have their own individual beliefs and ways of working. Belonging to a group would mean they'd have to compromise their own beliefs to suit the majority. Pagans do join together to celebrate major events like winter solstice and it is well advertised so no they're not afraid. Also they don't feel the need to belong to something. They pride themselves on being individuals with their own unique outlook on things. Druids and Wiccans are both pagans but have very different ideas about things and are likely to disagree about many things. They wouldn't see this as a bad thing and would happily agree to disagree. Shame that can't be said about other religions.

don't think each thing you examine, or hear. of direction members of classic Wiccan Covens do not see solitaries as being comparable to "ordinary Wiccans." it incredibly is as a results of the fact they are actually not. yet you look assuming that they see them as "inferior to ordinary Wiccans," that's usually not the case. As has been noted in the previous in this thread, there are some very genuinely substantial factors of Wicca that are basically transmitted with the aid of interplay interior the coven. This has been the way it is carried out for the reason that Wicca became presented, and continues to be the way it is carried out in British classic Wicca (Gardnerian, Alexandrian, and so on.) and different traditionally orientated paths. This, of direction, would not in any way detract from a man or woman's experience as a solitary as long as that particular is definitely fulfilled with the aid of that have. problems, besides the shown fact that, in many cases upward push up whilst defective (yet in many cases nicely meaning) human beings commence annoying that one direction adjust to the instructions or practices of yet another. it incredibly is an trouble-free certainty that solitary practice won't be able to furnish what Coven practice does (and likely, that works the two approaches). that would not propose that solitary practice isn't a valid, valid direction to fulfillment, yet everybody might desire to undergo in techniques that they are actually not an identical direction. the only challenge I even have with solitary practitioners is whilst they forget approximately that. there are a number of solitary classic Wiccans who found out interior the Coven putting yet, for one reason or yet another, have ended up training on my own. Even they see what they are doing as distinctive from their previous practice. not inevitably greater beneficial or worse, only distinctive. J.P. 3* Gard. HP

No I'm Wiccan and I live in a Strong Christian community and they leave us alone for the most part.

Pagans do nothing to Christians that would be completely against what being pagan is all about!
