first try to be absoloutely one hundred percent completely and utterly certain that said person is in love with someone else.
if you can't be sure about that, try and be absoloutey one hundred percent completely and utterly sure that said person thinks of you only as a friend.
if you can't be certain about either of those things, there is chance, so you should tell said person how you feel and see what they say. if they say they feel the same way, great. if not, act like it's no big deal and stay mates with that person, but try to get over them. it hurts like hell, and it could take years, but you need to move on.
however, if you ARE sure that they love someone else and think of you only as a friend, then cut out the awkwardness-don't tell said person, just try really hard to move on.
above all, don't let it take over your life. i know how hard that is, but it's best if you don't let yourself get crushed under the wieght of it all. keep optimistic, no matter how hard it gets.
plus sorry this answer isn't hugely optimistic, but i think it's really importnt to be honest in these situations.
xx good luck

You have to let them go. I have been there very recently and the more attached I get to him, the more I get hurt when he is with her. I am worth more than playing second fiddle, I am worth someone who loves me for me alone and does not have a problem 'chosing'. I have tried to be just friend, I cannot (neither can he) do it, too many feelings, I adore him too much. I have ended it all, I miss him dearly, he could have been the one but............ Break contact with them, refuse their calls/ texts etc. It is not easy but guard your own heart. Do not let this leave you with scars that cannot be heeled by no-one else. If they truly wanted you they would be with you. End of............

She is loving some different person even after understanding that you adore her basically shows that she doesn't love you. Why are you dropping your time for her love that you'll no longer get a minimum of for now. also love could come from the middle to love you & no longer by way of rigidity or by way of the different ability. desire you got it & flow on in life.

Real/Divine Love is unconditional. So just keep on loving! Human love(selfishness) seeks something in return.

wait patiently. Date other women and have a good time while waiting though. then when he dumps her or vice versa swoop in as the caring friend with big shoulders to cry on.

First, give yourself a set period of time to grieve, and then tell yourself that you are worthy of finding someone who will appreciate you....and move on as everyone is suggesting.
