I'm not real sure. I've been using it for years. I've never had a problem with spy-ware or viruses. But then I have very good protection on my PC. firewall,anti-virus, etc.
P.S.
There's always somebody that answers that LimeWire is illegal. LimeWire is NOT illegal. Downloading copyrighted material is.

Not really. If you mean "spyware" as in what kind of spyware and viruses that can be downloaded along with whatever music or content you get off LimeWire, then no, it can't, they may advertise it, but it can't. Try getting extra spyware software..some full versions of spyware protection software actually integrate with P2P programs (similar to how AVG integrates with Outlook express).
And, "this is truth" user, for the fifth time I've said this on Yahoo Answers, NOT ALL P2P IS ILLEGAL. You can get legal content from P2p.

I got Pro, and to me it's exactly the same as basic, without the stupid reminder to upgrade every time you use it. I still see lots of spyware and viruses on it, but I have good firewalls and filters for that crap. Mainly, just look for file sizes that are too small to be what you wanna download. For example, every file on there that is 857.1KB is a virus that disables your computers ability to boot up. I went through that way back, it was NO fun. Keep your firewall up to date, and your antivirus active and keep using Basic.. BTW if you just gotta have Pro, just download with the Basic version for free. I wouldn't spend money on it tho.

Simply put - don't use Limewire if you don't want spyware & viruses. Whether it be standard or pro, it's still very likely to infect your computer.
As an alternative, I suggest downloading Azureus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/) and using it to download torrent files. This is basically a much safer implementation of peer-to-peer filesharing. Although there is still a slight risk of infection, most risk is eliminated (because you are pulling data from millions of other users, so you will almost never receive a whole file from one person.
To find torrents, use a search engine like http://torrentsearch.us or http://www.mininova.org/.

Sharing FIles isn't illegal. (SUPPOSEDLY) "sharing" copy writtnen material is. And the way I use Limewire for music is I make sure that i have the "mp3" tab selected before a search. So the search only brings back "mp3 files" which are audio files. It won't bring back "exe files" which can be viruses and trojans.
