why do they say homosexuality is an abomination, but still eat pork, mix clothing fabics, eat shell fish, don't stone disobedient children, or tell women to cover their hair and take off their gold jewelry?

Perhaps because the first Apostles agreed that the only commandments from the Law of Moses that Christians had to continue to follow under the New Testament were the ones which were purely moral in nature, and not those which simply served to set apart Israel as a nation (see Acts chapter 15 for example).

Remember what you said about "context"? If you are going to be a Bible critic, you might want to try reading it.

We eat pork because Jesus, Paul & Peter all say that we can under the NT (Mark 7, Acts 10; Romans 14, etc.).

We condem homosexuality becaus Paul said that it was still a sin under the NT (Romans 1, etc.).

This question comes up all of the time, and it is a trick question designed to confuse people who have little or no Bible knowledge.

----------------------------edit----------------
Sceptis will always find some way to nit-pick at the Bible or Christianity, because they don't like God or his morality. Check out the guy who pokes fun of us for taking the Old Testament too literally. It seems that we are condemed if we do, and condemed if we don't:

There is an Old covenant and a New.

Just like the constitution and other docs have had to be amended so did the old covenant. Stoning wasn't a good policy anymore, and I know I will get bashed for this but sleeping with your brothers or sisters wasn't acceptable anymore.

There was a time that was OK, but just like everything the increase in population needs to make way for changes.

Again I will get bashed for this, but separation of church and state, right to bare arms. These were laws put in place when there were only thousands of people here not millions. It didn't mean any crack head without a criminal background should have the right to get a gun at Walmart. It meant the British are coming go in the shed and defend your land!!! The forefathers are rolling in their graves right now at the state in which the country is in.

OK enough I am off my soap box

God Bless

The Bible is a text book for living and the reason that homosexuality is an abomination because it goes against that natural order of relationships and is based solely on selfishness and unrestrained lusts of the flesh. But for eating pork there was a reason for this dietary requirement for in those days pork could not be kept from spoiling and carried many diseases. Shell fish the same reason. Christianity does seem to be a smorgasboard afair as you say, good insight. It should not be so, but unfortunately due to the splittering or denominationalism this is the by product of it, and even more things to come that are worse than this.

But Christianity is not about what not to eat or not what to do but about a living vital powerful growing relationship in Christ. To produce a statement that Christ has come and dwells in all those who have called upon His Name for salvation.

BOY ARE YOU CONFUSED OR WHAT? We are no longer under the OLD Testament. Christ is the Testator of the New Testament and when he ( the testator died and rose again ) the OLD LAW was done away with.

God himself told Peter to rise , kill and eat , all manner of meat that was laid out on a sheet in front of him, when Peter said no, it was unclean God said DO not Call anything I have made unclean!

IF we were under the WHOLE OLD TESTAMENT TODAY ...sacrifices daily of doves, lambs without blemish, purification of women during that time of the month , etc.etc.etc. no one does it because Christ nailed the IMPERECT OLD LAWS TO THE CROSS.

1 Cor. 13 When that which is PERFECT (CHRIST) is come that which is in part shall be done away.

Christ is the ultimate sacrifice. Through him we are set free from the bondage of sin.

John 8:32 And ye shall know the TRUTH and the TRUTH shall set you free.
Jesus said, I am the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE, no man cometh unto the Father but by me.

READ Romans 1:22-32 This is in the NEW TESTAMENT and tells that Homosexuality is a sin, among others.

1 Corinthians 11:15 For a WOMAN'S HAIR IS GIVEN TO HER FOR A COVERING!

Thus , we are not commanded to put a piece of cloth over part of our hair or head or to cover up our heads entirely. OUR HAIR IS OUR COVERING! ( DON'T SHAVE YOUR HEAD)
It would be a pleasant change to see someone study GOD'S word as diligently as they seem to twist it on here., at times.

________No the Bible says the act of homosexuality is the sin
Le 20:13 "The penalty for homosexual acts is death to both parties. They have committed a detestable act and are guilty of a capital offense.

Mt 15:11 "You are not defiled by what you eat; you are defiled by what you say and do. "

Mt 15:17 "Anything you eat passes through the stomach and then goes out of the body.

1Co 11:15 "And isn't it obvious that long hair is a woman's pride and joy? For it has been given to her as a covering."

Ge 24:53 "Then he brought out silver and gold jewelry and lovely clothing for Rebekah. He also gave valuable presents to her mother and brother. "

Mt 15:4 "For instance, God says, 'Honor your father and mother,' and 'Anyone who speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death."

Im not a bible scholar, but ill answer the question. Homosexuallity has been around for a long time and God has said it was sinful through out the Bible. The eating of pork and covering of heads were Jewish customs In the New Testament Jesus states you can eat and drink what u want as long as its not in excess..

You are taking many issues to task here. No one could answer you without writing a thesis. First let's establish that God is a creation of man...not more or less. We created God to insure that after life there is an eternity where our souls can reside rather than perish into nothingness. All civilizations have done the same....Buddhist...Hindu or Muslim...Christian or Druid have created a 'heaven' but enter man with thoughts on creating a more perfect human and there we have problems....pork...fish on Fridays...vegetarians...deviant sexual behavior...etc. We are animals in our sexuality (about 50% of ducks are homosexual and about 75% of farm boys have had sex with animals...according to Pomeroy)....so Constantine amalgamated paganism with Christianity and Alexander the Great had a merry time with his boyfriend. It is pure hypocrisy.

It's how and what they believe in the bible, and all the diffierent religions meet those needs, so the question is if you don't take the bible literally, are we going to hell or heaven?

Your question begins with a contradiction. Context sometimes tells us not to take the Bible literally.
