Possibly because of the terrorism that has been striking the US and other countries. The terrorism makes the news because of the number of people who are injured or die. Don't let the terrorists win! That's what they want. Many safeguards are now in place to reduce the chances of someone threatening our safety (at airports passport requirements, restrictions on carry-on items, locked cockpit, etc.). If you go to NYC, you will see signs on the subway saying "If you see something, say something". Thousands of people ride the subways daily, and everyone is watching out for themselves and others.
Overcome your fears, have fun, and just travel. It's still safer than riding in a car. I plan to travel at least twice this year and not let terrorists scare me into staying home.

You may be suffering from anxiety attacks, if you can't work out why then talk to your doc, they can give you medication to suppress the fear.

I suffered some years ago, just being too far from the safety of my home. This was due to a medical problem which caused me to pass out, I felt safe at home as I was afraid of it happening in public. Once I understood my medical problem and could control it I recovered my confidence.

You need to discover what is causing your fear and then overcome it whatever way you can.

There is a lot of info on the internet relating to anxiety (or panic) attacks, try searching under anxiety attacks.

Is it just trains, what about buses or planes, do you have the same problem?

Well, one thing is for sure, you have a fear of trains. Maybe, if you want to get over this fear, you should try to go on one of those mini trains, like to zoo trains. I don't know why you fear train travel though, it is way more enjoyable than plane travel.

And, if you use coach, than the price is less expensive than a plane ticket.

Sounds like mild depression or slight agrophobia. You probably should go to your GP and explain your symptoms and if he is sympathetic may give you a short dose of anti depressants or a mild sedative. I had this problem last year where I didn't want to go too far from home and was diagnosed as mildly depressed. This time of the year its quite common, what with the dark afternoons and grim weather. Best of Luck...I know you are not alone in feeling like this.

Had the same problem myself for a while, turns out it was the start (and I don't wish to alarm you) of panic attacks all for no apparent reason.
However a referral by my MD to an councillor plus time and patience on my part soon had me unafraid to travel anywhere, meditation and breathing exercises also helped a lot.

I wish you well in your quest for inner peace(sooner rather than later).

I don't know, but you get Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to get over your fears. Speak to your GP to refer you to someone. I have also heard that hypnotherapy is good to get over fears aswell.
