i would expect that is so the meat is not damaged nor brused by a bullet, Using a priest accros the head is still as affective in killing the seal/pup, but like you say not as humane. Its there way of living up there on the tundra they can not make money the way we can so they do it in the way that they can.
The seal can be used for many things, meat, fat/oil, skin, all broken down there is a use for each one.

Seal hunting Is not done with firearms as it is not more humane. Actually firearms could be more dangerous due to the ice. Clubbing seals is quite humane when done right and as stated does not damage the pelt like a bullet hole would. It is important to point out that it is a brutal way to kill them if you think about it, but its the act that is brutal the kill is clean and quick which is Quite humane. But this should be pointed out that this is not hunting this seal hunt which is not portrayed properly is more like trapping as this is done for the pelts.

In closing clubbing seals is more humane than using firearms its just that the act has gotten negative media attention and is made out to sound worse than it is. Its not different than kill nets for fishing as far as I am concerned.

Hope that helps

"Seal pups remain helpless and vulnerable on the ice for several weeks. It is during this same time when seals only two weeks to three months old are also mercilessly slaughtered for their pelts."

The gunshot would damage the pelt and the bullet costs money. With all of the fur farms in other countries there is no excuse for killing these babies. Having been an avid hunter for more than thirty years, I am of the opinion that there is no humane way to kill. I try to make it quick and clean, and then eat/use the whole animal.

They are not hunters, that only do that for the money, and yes they do not want bullet holes in the hides.
I am a hunter, and I would not do that to a baby seal. Real hunters hunt for food, don't get me wrong I love the "hunt", but if I kill it I am going to eat it.

They club them because when their cubs the fur is white and that's where the money is, Blood is the problem for the pelt hunters it tends to stain them. I know there talk of banning it forever and i wish that would happen.

Those aren't hunters. There is nothing to do with hunting when clubbing seals. True hunters are gentlemen who respect the animals they kill and use the animal for food. Those butchers who kill seals for commercial gain are not gentlemen.

do it for the fur holes from bullets bring down the value. Nobody complains about knocking a pig on the head before they stick him with a knife and let the loss of blood kill it
