No, the Pope is not a mediator between God and Man. The catholic Church teaches there is only one mediator - Jesus Christ.
The Pope is the chief shepherd of the Catholic Church. Shortly before he ascended into Heaven, Jesus told Peter to feed His lambs. Jesus understood that after He left, His people would still need a shepherd. The Pope is the latest in a line of shepherds.

For the most part belief is what they have in common. Both believe that Christ is the son of God. Most of the differences come down to ritual and subtle beliefs. While protostants believe that anyone who truely believes in Christ will be saved, catholics believe that only catholics will be saved. Any christian can participate in holy communion in a protostant church, while only catholics who have had first communion may participate in a catholic church. Protestants only participate in the the sacrements in which Christ participated, while Catholics have many more. Catholics must confess to a priest for absolution, protestants feel the only confession that's necessary is to God. catholics look to the Pope as head of the religion while protestants look directly to God as head. There are many more differences, but those are some of the big ones.

particularly the unique King James version coated all seventy 3 stimulated books, merely as they have been defined as quickly as and consistently by potential of the bishops of the Catholic Church on the Council of Carthage in 397 advert. It replaced into the selection of Martin Luther to do away with 10 of the stimulated books from the Holy Bible - 3 New testomony books and seven old testomony books. thankfully his followers does not pay attention of removing the writings of the Apostles themselves, and have been on the factor of a revolt over the priority. So Luther backed off and left the recent testomony intact, yet nonetheless bumped off the 7 old testomony texts. this is why the Protestant Bible is incomplete, having purely sixty six books rather of the full seventy 3. And if Luther had his way, Protestants might have purely sixty 3 books. The Catholic Church nonetheless makes use of the full and complete Holy Bible, because it replaced into initially defined, and because it replaced into utilized by potential of each and every Christian in the international for a million,2 hundred years between the time it replaced into compiled and the time Luther bumped off aspects he did no longer like. different than those 7 lacking books, the only ameliorations between the unique version and the Protestant version are some words Luther inserted into the text fabric right here and there, in an attempt to assist a number of his new doctrines. as an instance, in places the place the text fabric states that faith is needed for salvation (a genuine assertion), Luther inserted the interest "on my own", in result rewriting the text fabric to declare that "faith on my own" is needed for salvation (an untrue assertion that rapidly contradicts different statements in the interest of God).

The most obvious difference for someone who practices neither religion is the Catholic leaders practice hypocracy on a fairly regular basis....ie. you should always forgive, but if you get a divorce (or input other anti-Catholic practice here) you will be excommunicated and NOT "forgiven." There are other key differences such as priests are not allowed to marry and must resort to child abuse to fulfill their urges while ministers may have a family and ironically enough, you don't often hear of ministers abusing the youth of their Church.

The Pope is the successor to Peter, and thus the earthly head of the Church. Therefore, he is the Vicar of Christ. So while the Pope is the visible head, Jesus is always the invisible head of the Church.
