I would say to keep it clean and well-brushed. Having a longer-haired dog myself, I can understand your plight. I keep his hair short, to help with the knots. No matter what though, he still gets them in his "armpit" area. Just give the area a quick brushing each day or every other day, and maybe a wipe with a cleansing cloth.

As the others said: keep the fur brushed and trim it short to keep it from become matted.

Get under there with a trimmer, and shorten his fur back so it isn't long enough to get tangled up.

You can have that shaved close to the skin, if you can't do it then a groomer or sometimes your vet will do it.
