My daughter is making a Cassava Cake for a school project to represent a food from Fiji. However, I have never heard of Cassava and I dont know if its something you can buy at a local grocery store.

In a supermarket! It is a south American plant with thick roots and grown for food. Usually it comes in flour form. If you can't find it yourself, ask the store assistant and give the description above!

cassava is a root or tuber, very starchy - i guess its kind of like a sweet potato or yam... in Fiji i believe they often bake it in its skin - which is quite thick - in a sort of underground oven.
i don't know if your local grocery store will stock it - here in the UK i can get it at small specialist grocers or food markets but not often in the large chain supermarkets.
