My jaw/mouth has been hurting for about a week now. It hurts in a certain spot whenever I open my mouth. Its almost like the pain I had before I had my wisdom teeth taken out. Any ideas what might be causing this?

Does it pop alot when you open and close your mouth? If so it could be TMJ. I was born with a dislocation or a broke jaw. I was 12 when they diagnosed me with acute inflammatory arthritis. My only options were to have my jaw broke and reset or to have braces. But there were no guarantees. Could even possibly make it worse so I chose to live with it. But I have read about TMJ. Though not diagnosed with it.

What is TMJ/TMD?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint connecting the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull (temporal bone). The lower jaw and the skull are connected by a number of muscles and ligaments, which function in harmony with each other if the lower jaw is in the correct position. The head of the jaw bone (lower jaw) is called the condyle and it fits into the concavity of the temporal bone called the glenoid fossa. The TM joint resembles a ball and socket with the round condyle being the ball and the glenoid fossa of the temporal bone being the socket. For normal joint function to occur, a piece of cartilage called an articular disc acts as a cushion or shock absorber between the two bones.
When the lower jaw opens and closes, the disc stays between the condyle and the glenoid fossa of the temporal bone at all times. When this happens, this is a normal healthy TMJ and the patient can open wide without any discomfort and without any noise. With a normal opening, the patient should be able to get three fingers between the upper and lower front teeth when the mouth is open as wide as possible. In cases where the TM joint is functioning normally with the disc in the proper position, the muscles of the head, neck and shoulders function relatively pain-free. good luck

Stress can cause this kind of pain, especially if you hold your stress in your jaw. I hold mine in my shoulders. If I knew exactly where the pain was in your jaw/mouth I could better help you. I suggest massaging the area. Sometimes the muscles in your face just get tired and achy. If that doesn't work then I would go to a dentist.

Temporal Mandable Joint Syndrome, you are clinching and grinding your teeth at night, go to your dentist and he can light file the back teeth to close properly, if it is severe they can make you a bite block to wear at night. If you don't have the money go to wal-mart and get an athletic guard like they wear for football, follow directions on the package to form it to your mouth and wear at night, it takes a little getting used to but it really helps and will prevent future problems dental and jaw joint..
