We just got a poodle from the local pound but she wont eat anything, except 2 of the moist dog treats, we have tried hard food and wet, no she isn't starving but not sure what to do. Also she was so matted and her hair so over grown it was 4 inches long when we took her to the groomer that we wondered how the shelters check for pregnancy. The groomer after shaving her down said how her stomach is shaped she looks pregant. I felt her belly but dont seem to feel any puppies but I am no professional and vets are closed the next 2 days

My dog refused to eat when she came home too (although she was well taken care of at the shelter). This was because we switched brands from Pedigree which she had been eating, (Horrible... HORRIBLE food to feed a dog) to Nutrience. In order to make her eat something, we would buy some wet food and mix it about 1/2 and 1/2 with dry food (more than you are supposed to). She was fine eating that. Now that we have had her for a month, she will eat dry food perfectly. If that still doesn't work you can try mixing some grains with some boiled meat such as rice and beef bits, or chicken and mushy whole grain bread.

As for the pregnancy, the groomers probably knows. Think about how many dogs they see every week! Every year! And how many years have they been in the buisness? Although they may not be able to diagnose more difficult issues, pregnant dogs still come by on a regular basis.

Looks like your poodle will be a mom soon.... and the pound should be reported for treating her so badly and not reporting the pregnancy to you.

Besides this, I think it is time for a trip to the vets, regardless, to make sure that she is healthy and that not eating is not a symptom of something other than stress and food change.

Good luck with everything!

Well the best thing to do is take her to your vet when they open. He can check her to make sure she is not pregnant. Also she might not be eating because everything is new to her. Try boiling some chicken, plain, no salt, pepper ect, no bones and mix it with some plain rice and see if she will eat that.
