You can never be too old to learn, but if you are thinking about doing anything professionally with it, then start NOW! That's right. Stop reading this and go for it!
If you really want an advantage to catching up with everybody, then take the extra time and effort to be classically trained. Classical guitar is so much more demanding than pop guitar, and learning it will give you a huge, undefinable advantage.
I took classical guitar for 5 years with the intention of starting a band and going all the way with my music, and it was the best thing I could have done to get a headstart. Now, I have all the skills I need for an advantage, with plenty of time left to start a career and still a lifetime to completely master the instrument.
Get started as soon as you can because the guitar is the easiest instrument to learn, and the hardest to master.
Good luck and have fun playing (if you choose to do so.)

If you are planning on waiting 6 years than you don't really want to play that bad. I taught and played professionally for many years so my opinion of good and yours may be different. If you just want to strum your favorite songs by playing a few chords then you could do it in a year or so. If you want to become a serious guitarist it takes much longer and requires a lot of dedication. It is better to start younger because if you don't have time at 16, you certainly won't have the time or the drive at 24.

You can learn ANY skill at ANY time of your life.
Yes, your neural pathways develope more easily when you're young. So what?
I taught myself to write music. People said I had a "born talent" for it. To prove them wrong, I taught myself a lot of other useless little talents too.
You can learn guitar now or at age 24. The tricky part is with waiting that long is whether you really stick to your goal or not.
And the degree to which you learn anything, guitar or otherwise, is how much time you invest. If you invest a couple of hours a week now or at age 24, neither one will help you. If you buckle down and practice every day, you're liable to get far better, no matter your age.

well, the question is, why dont you have time, ur 16, what would you do that takes so much time, i stared last year when I was 16, and i play all the time. when ur 24 it will be worse, cuase you will probably be working, so start now, i would say.
here is a website where you can search for lessons and search for songs that you like, that you think u can play.
http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/
and here is where u can learn to read 'tabs' (its also at ultimateguitar.com)
http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/search.php?s=tablature&w=lessons
good luck, and practice, practice, practice.
it takes a couple of years to get good. and i would just like to say that you can never stop learning the guitar, its never ending and you can only keep improving. there is never i time where you can say, ok im good now, i can play guitar, so i can stop practicing.
ive been playing for a year now, i think i can play well, ive just learned the whole song of raining blood by slayer. you probably dont know them but im so proud of my self for learning the song
:)

I've been playing for about 3 years. And I'd say I'm pretty good, lots of people enjoy my entertaining and they also say I'm very good. You will be able to play songs right off the bat, but it will take a while to get really good at songs, and to get into harder material. I've started when I was about 11 and now I'm 13, and believe it or not, I'm good. I've performed in shows and all, guitar is my life. No matter what, keep on! Don't worry about getting finished, just do it!

WHOA!!!!!
Stop listening to everyone.
1) The sooner you start the better... Age 8 isn't too soon...
Actually 16 is a bit LATE
2) At 16 - You don't have time at all? WHAT exactly do you do
they you can't do with a guitar in your hand.
3) Few get REALLY GOOD. Most will get to be musical.
It all depends on your attitude and aptitude.
Seems Like BOTH your attitude and aptitude are in question.

everybody and his brother so that. break away and take up some other instrument when you have the time. should have taken band or a school orchestra and learned real music not pop guitar. it gets so repitious. did it. spent thousands on all sorts of guitars but had a good job and family and didn't drop that and build a band. thank god. i suspect every teenager in the u.s. has a damn guitar. wish it was banned on tv. often mute my tv and click on subtitles.

i started playing the guitar last year. it was hard to learn at first but after the first three months i could pick up any song and learn it and play it well. it depends how good you want to be. if you want to be like keith richards good *that* takes years, but if you just want to be able to play normally or make up your own stuff that doesnt take long. get a good teacher and take lessons its worth it.
good luck
