finches are probably the smallest but not a real hands on type of bird... try a parrotlet if you are looking for a small bird thats good to handle..alot of people will suggest budgies or parakeets but parrotlets are a great alternative to them.. and more personal.....good luck!!! smile
(are you looking or just asking a question?)
go to these sites they tell you alot about the breed:

Breeding birds is probably one of the harder animals to breed. Usually when two birds bond and begin breeding they shy away from humans, so it may not be likely you'll be able to play with them. On top of that, handfeeding is an art form if done incorrectly can kill a baby in one wrong move. Not to mention that there are SO many birds in the world being abused or neglected, or sitting in resuces right now that need homes because birds are often bought on impulse and people haven't the faintest idea what they're getting themselves into. If you're doing this for the love of birds (and not finacially motivated) why not help with a local rescue group in your area? Or assist people who've lost their birds in getting reuntied with them? I wouldnt' recommend breeding birds to anyone who hasn't owned them for several years.

Non interactive small pet bird breeds ie don't like or want human physical interacation; canaries, finches.
Potential to like and want interaction with humans IF they were handfed or you have the skills to humanely tame; cockatiels, lovebirds, budgies (parakeets).
Smaller breeds of parrots that are more money but have a good potential for really liking human interaction if they were handfed; senegals, conures (these are loud though).

Well if your looking for a small parrot budgie (parakeet) lovebird, cocktail, parrotlet, min macaw, conjure. If you are looking for a finch like bird canary, zebra, Gouldian, social, spice, there is a lot more but these are the ones on the top of my head. But there is also doves and pigeons, I would suggest the diamond dove and the rock pigeon.
