Heart-warming news for hardcore coffee drinkers like myself: Drinking coffee may reduce risk of diabetes.
The study ... found that people who regularly tanked up on large amounts of coffee significantly reduced the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, compared to non-coffee drinking participants. Male coffee drinkers cut their risk by 50 percent and female coffee drinkers reduced their risk by nearly 30 percent.
The story reports on a Harvard study that expands on a Dutch study from last year.
What the story also does, though, is illuminate one of the difficulties with reporting on health stories. The Houston Chronicle story I linked does offer a couple caveats, but is pretty darn glowing overall. Compare that with this story from the National Business Review of New Zealand. In many ways it provides a more balanced view, including this note up high in the story:
[N]aturally, the results results come with a caution from experts who say it may not be the coffee, but rather something about the people drawn to drink it that protects them.
A pretty critical piece of information there, I think, because it means that if you don't already have a habit, reducing your diabetes risk might not be as simple as starting to slam coffee.
