I would start with covering the bottom of the box with a small amount to see if that meets with the cat's approval. Even when you are using scoopable litter there are always small particles that remain in the box and cause odors to build up. If you use a small amount it is not wasteful and more environmentally friendly the less there is too discard when the box is washed and the litter completely changed. I even sieve my litter after I take the waste out of the box to remove those small particles.

I was very surprised once when a new shelter director instructed us to put only about 1/2 cup of litter in the cats' boxes. I found out they would use it as they just needed to have something to scratch before going in the box. We were disposing of huge amounts of clay litter every day at the shelter because the boxes were always dumped and new litter put in the boxes.

Some of this depends on the cat, but as a rule I think it's best to have it pretty full. The whole idea is that cats like to burry their business when they are done. So if you provide a good layer of litter, the cat can dig and cover just as he/she would outside. Also, if you use clumping litter there is no waste of litter. Whatever hasn't come in contact with waste shakes off in the removal process.

Depends on your cat, when it buries, does it scrape the bottom of the litter box? Too little litter. Or does it spread litter all around the floor? Too much. My personal preference when I had a cat was about 3/4 full, litter is cheap, if cleaned daily and replaced periodically it was no big deal.

Not an easy one to answer here. Kittens need very shallow littler because they are so close to it that the dust (when they scratch and bury) can actually cause their respiratory systems harm). They also need a shallow pan to get in and out of easier. Most adult cats need 2-3 inches thick (or a bit more even), other wise they will scratch everything around the box trying to cover up, but won't get the job done. Of course if you are using clay litter and change it daily an inch is fine as you won't care if they are covering up or not (though it might frustrate the cat).

Compromise - use about 3 1/2 inches of litter. It actually says on the container how much to use! If you don't use enough, the urine will soak through to the bottom and won't clump. If you use enough, the clumps will be easy to remove without leaving a mess. Its impossible to use too much litter unless it's overflowing.

And while we're on the subject ... those "liner bags" are useless. The cat will claw through them, make holes where urine-soaked litter will collect under the liner and be impossible to remove. Don't use liners. If you use enough litter, the urine won't even reach the bottom, and you won't need a liner.

depends on the kind of litter and your cats preference...

if its clay litter - you dont want to use too much becuase clay litter needs to be dumped frequently and the box cleaned right out - so if you used a lot it would be wasted...

if its clumping litter you can use more since you dont have to totally dump the box out as often as with clay.. most cats prefer non-scented clumping and like it deeper...
some litter boxes are deeper than others of course....

with the silicone bead litter - 1 whole bag for a regular box or 1 1/2 bags -2 bags if your box is really big...

Fill it up to the middle. You don't want it too high (because when your cat tries to cover up her poop and stuff, the litter will get all on the floor), an you want it too low (because when your cat goes to the bathroom it'll stick to the bottom of the box, and when your cat tries to cover it, she won't have enough litter to do so). I hope I helped.

You want to put enough in so that the cat feels there is enough to cover any of its business and then some, but not much more than that. If there's too much then the litter underneath it doesn't feel solid enough to it to stand on comfortably.
