Well from personal experience (from being abused as a child) if they see marks of abuse they question the child first and if they cant get the child to confirm what happened they go and question the parents..well thats what most ER staff would do. However, some mind their own business and ignore it which isnt a good thing to do.

If they cant get a confirmation from the parents they will maybe do xrays on the child to see how deep the bruises go or if anything is harmed internally and if they suspect it they can report the parents to child protective services.

there is a speicalist doctor,and or paedriatrican, on these wards and once the child is in emergency dept. the staff can take details.but must call for one of the above.
