Because how the eggs are stored is so important, the date on the carton is less so....
Here is a simple test. (It works... a chef instructor taught it to me in culinary school) Put them in a bowl and cover with water (over an inch higher than the eggs) If they lay on the bottom they are fine. If the float, throw them away.
Additionally, Dfirefox is incorrect... you can freeze eggs. Bakeries buy them by the carton and freeze them (you just need to take them out of the shells) I have used yolks and frozen the white for later use and vice-versa.
Hope this helps

the date refers to the GRADE of the egg. after dec 5th, they are no longer grade A or AA depending on what you bought. grade refers to freshness and all they have done is been donwgraded! they are not bad at all and will not make you sick unless the shells have been cracked or they were bad in the first place! when eggs pass the date, they get taken back to the plant and re-packaged with a lower grade! I AM CERTAIN OF THIS! they are then usually sold to industrial bakeries and kitchens. those eggs will wind up in bread, mixes, etc. it takes quite while for an egg to go bad. ask a home ec teacher. they'll tell you! you wouldn't want to keep them for months after the date, but even a few weeks is fine. i would also suggest the float method. eggs may be past where they will taste any good but still not make you sick. besides, eggs are inexpensive, so unless you're in a pinch, just toss and get more.

As far as I know, as long as eggs are refrigerated they last a real long time.
If you crack the egg carefully in a bowl, and the egg yellow breaks immediately then I would think twice about eating it.
And also if it is bad, it will smell bad when you crack it too, like the commonly used phrase "rotten as an egg"

Unless they have been in the freezer, I wouldn't use them at all.
