When the two of us go to the pub I have noticed that my male colleague always manages to work things so that we are sitting side by side on one side of a table rather than facing each other across it. I mentioned this to a friend of mine who is convinced this means he fancies me. I suspect it means the opposite as it makes direct eye contact more difficult. Does anybody know what such positioning is likely to mean?

He's a million miles from being a touchy feely person, so no, he doesn't touch me at all.

Why don't you ask him jokingly?
I think if he's sitting besides you instead of the more normal face to face like 99% of everybody else does he might have a thing for you--not the other way around. He might think that if he sits across from you he might develop a thing for you. Do you know anyone else who might go out to eat with him? See how he sits with them. That will tell you if he always sits that way or if he only does that when he's around you.

If he's always making sure you're sitting beside him as opposed to across from him it must mean something. The fact that he never touches you one could only guess he's gay, has only platonic feelings or just can't handle making the first move by touching you. Avoiding eye contact with you not encouraging towards romance at all.

Does he touch you or put his arm around you? If not then the way he sits doesn't necessarily mean anything. Next time he sits close to you try touching him and see how he reacts. If he wants to sit across from you after that then thats probably a good sign that he's not interested.

No Think it through.......if there's no guy around, or in the picture at all.......this would mean a woman would NEVER cross her legs. What if she had to go potty? She could HATE the guy she's talking to, cross her legs to try and prevent an accident, and he'd get the wrong impression. Luck
