As I read most questions posted here about dogs and the problems they are presenting their owners with, I wonder. Has anybody ever heard of APPROPRIATE corrections? If so, why not apply them? When did the IDIOTIC idea of ONLY motivational training ever start? Why have so many people forgotten the fact that we are dealing with dogs that NEED DISCIPLINE in their lives? And finally, do these people realize that WE are filling up the shelters with OUR neurotic behaviors towards our dogs by making them neurotics too?

I hate that never-say-no-bribe-with-a-treat crap that people seem to think is one size fits all techniques.

Dogs are individuals and should be trained like that. The PP method does not work well for many problem dogs, they need a firm hand, NOT bribes!

That said, I do have a youngster I trained with treats only (although I did used the 'no' word). She is a very 'soft' dog and a correction would have made her shut down.

Too many trainers today cannot read a dog and use whatever techniques would work best. Instead, they ONLY use PP, or ONLY use harsh methods. MOST of the trainers who believe in the one size fits all techniques are of the PP variety.

Your asking people here if they discipline their dogs when most don't bother to discipline their children. Also, many of these dogs are given to the kids for them to raise. The parents don't have the time for the kids so they give them a dog to love them. There is a whole generation of dogs that don't even know they are dogs. Let the poor thing become a problem and its OFF to the pound. Most people have never seen a REAL DOG in action. They get upset if they live outside, don't have designer dishes and a diamond collar. It seems so strange either the dogs of today are getting too much or too little. Many don't know they are dogs from being spoiled rotten and others are mistreated and dumped in pounds. That's what makes me wonder.

Will you adopt me? I am basically a good dog. But I do like to dig now and then. My owner says I dig like a backhoe. What's that?
