If you ask in the "biblical" sense of the word, it is open to interpretation; for some people it is the speaking of an ancient or angelic language not known to man, but to God. While other people believe it is the speaking of a foreign language that you may or may not have studied.

Speaking in tongues is when you are speaking a completely different language which only God understands. You don't even know how you do it, it just comes from within and it comes from your feelings. It usually happens when people are praying over you. If you're interested more in it, there's a few things on the internet about it. Hope This Helps! :-)

Speaking in Tongues is verbal communication with God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit via a Heavenly language understandable only by the Father. It is conferred upon you when you are baptized in the Holy Spirit. You will not understand what you are saying but the Father will understand you.
Reference: Chapter 2 of the Book of Acts, King James version or variations of the King James version.

Speaking in tongues is found among many so-called charismatic religions. When people put themselves in trance they begin to utter all kinds of unintelligible sounds. This is called "glossolalia" and the other believers take these sounds to be foreign and ancient languages. Of course it is nothing of the kind.
In the early Christian church this phenomenon was quite common and you just have to think of the disciples who began to "speak in tongues" on Pentecost.
Examples of charismatic religions are the Pentecostals, but also Santeria and Voodoo. These phenomena are found all over the world.

Speaking in tongues is the ability to speak in languages that you yourself have no prior knowledge of. It's viewed as a spiritual gift, though it is fabled more than it is actually valued as an existing ability. The Christian Bible says that a display such as speaking in tongues is worthless unless done with love. A few modern evangelical Christian groups claim that they have this ability as they spiritually become closer to God though the Bible claims that their is no relation between spirituality and works, rather between spirituality and love/compassion/joyfulness.

It means that you're speaking in Latin or very ancients tongues (languages that are not long in used or very arcaic / primitive forms of a modern language)

It refers to people in a state of religious ecstasy spouting off in an unintelligible series of words that no one understands.
This was a phenomena that first is described by Paul in the Bible, and that pops up in certain emotional groups from time to time.
Presumably, they are praying. Presumably, God understands them.
