Well most children can start babysitting around 12 - 14 it really depends not on age but maturity to handle emergency situations. There are babysitting courses offered that teach you what to do in emergency situations. You will find that by taking this course (can be done in a weekend I believe) if you pass you get a certificate which will help you get jobs babysitting because parents know you are prepared for just about anything.......and with children you need to be!

where i live children have to be 12 to take the "babysittiers course". I think it all depends on how old your children are-i certainly wouldn't feel comfortable leaving a newborn with a 12 year old. Also depends on the maturity level of the person you have babysitting-some kids no matter what age are immature. Good luck!

i started at 15, but lots of my friends started at 13 or 14. in the UK you have to be above 12 to be left alone in the house anyway, so i think that a couple of years after that is reasonable. it does depend on how mature you are and whether you would be confident to look after children in someone else's house (sometimes at night?)
when i first started i babysat for people whose children i aleady knew because their houses are close by. this reassured me because if anything happened my own parents were only a minute's walk away!
but i think really its up to what you feel comfortable with, and whether the people you're babysitting for trust you...because if they do, you're probably ready, so you may as well start!

I started at 14, I really enjoyed it and the kids lived right opposite my parents home so I knew if i needed help they were there. I would be wary babysitting for people you dont know too well at that age especially if they dont live nearby. Make sure you can get home safe. Good luck!!

12 or 13 probably depending on how mature you are. I would highly recommend taking a babysitting course through your city or county community center. It was only a couple nights after school and it will give you credentials to tell your prospective customers about.
