Maid of Honor (or Matron of Honor) usually wears a very similar dress to the bridesmaids, but the dress is usually slightly different to differentiate the MoH.

I have always saw the maid of honor wear the same dress or a similar dress but in a different color than the other brides maids. Ex: If the brides maids have on pink dresses and the wedding colors are pink and silver then the maid of honor would have on a silver dress. or The maid of honor would have on a fancier dress than the other brides maids. Congratulations!

Its not necessary to wear the same dresses. The Maid of honor can wear a different dress but not too much away from the design of the bridesmaids. No rule for this.

She can wear the same dress. If you are having bridesmaids pick their dress style with a certain color (getting to be popular to do this, sounds tacky but great if the maids have very different body types), then the MoH generally will be in a slightly lighter shade of the same color. Otherwise, she can have the different style dress in the same color while all other bridesmaids have the same style.

If you are having them all in the same dress, the MoH can have a different bouquette, or an extra piece of jewelry to signify her position.

Or, they can all be the same. MoH has the same dress, just stands closest to you.

It's your wedding, do what you like!

Where did people this idea that a wedding is supposed to match people up like a chorus line? ... Except for all the gentlemen in the wedding party adhering to the same level of formality (white tie, black tie, morning formal, or business suits), there is no "rule" even that the bridesmaids must match each other. Trying to get mothers and grandmothers of bride and groom to get into matching costumes, like a set of bookends, is simply asking for trouble.

If you can manage to keep all these people to the same level of formality (for example, no long dresses for afternoon weddings unless you are the bride) and to prevent them from wearing colors that absolutely clash with those of the wedding party or each other, then you will have beautiful wedding photos. Be satisfied with that much and relax!

She can but sometimes brides like the MOH to be unique-she may wear a different dress in the same style or a different color but same dress. The decision is all up to the bride.

yes they do
In more superstitious times, the bride and groom were surrounded by friends of similar ages dressed in similar attire, as a way of confusing evil demons. This way the demons could not find the real bride and groom and bring them bad luck. Today's bridesmaids dress alike, as do the groomsmen, as it's a way of confusing any who would wish the couple ill luck.
