I was already aware of the situation but there seems to be a mass movement of africans into southern european countries. Tourist spots in the med are being overrun by these rowing boats turning up with 100's of people. Who are trying to get to spain or italy. I like to think weve done pretty well for ourselves here in europe (even though im not a big fan of this EU thing), but it seems the africans see what we have and they want it. Can europe deal with africa moving over here. Feel free to tell me im wrong!

I agree with the statement that you cant blame these people. But the colonialism in a lot of these countries did cause many problems. Most of the former french colonies are awful palces and i believe belgium is responsible for Rwanda (And look what happened there). But on the other side of the argument, look at india, on the verge of becoming a superpower, and many people agree this is due to british colonialism. The slavery that occured in africa was terrible but many countries have recovered from far worse. Aid seems to be pumped into africa constantly but because they would rather spend it on guns rather than food, their people die. Look at zimbabwe (formely known as the breadbasket of africa). "Ill take this guys land becuase he makes lots of money from it, even though i dont know anything about farming" .We can hope that maybe one day the penny will drop.

A few people refer to colour as an issue. And i agree! Maybe that is why the australians, kiwis and South Africans dont get such a hard time. Have you seen how many there are of them in London? Adds a little perspective.

Mr. Curious - I wasn't even going to answer this but I have to respond to yours. Where exactly were the grand cities raided by the slave traders, thus 'reducing' Africa to poverty?

I'm from the US, and while blacks here (and whites) are in full agreement that slavery was bad, I don't know any blacks who think they would have been better off staying in Africa.

There has developed a worldwide cult of victimization which may be more comfortable than other options of thought but is NOT constructive. Given the numbers of poor in the world and their birth rates, the ONLY way to address the problem is in their homelands, which means requiring a mechanism so that the money actually goes where it is needed. People were all for aid to Africa 15 years ago here, but seeing where the money went discouraged that impulse. Yes we agreed to double aid along with other western countries, without any conviction that it would do any good. It is the INVESTMENT of aid side that needs reform.

You can try to blame things on history, with all perpetraters long since dead, or you can try to look to solutions.

Through out history, humanity and even animals has sort a way to better it self.

We can sit down here is apparent luxury and talk down the men and women that put themselves at risk to come here to work and cater for their families in African, Asia and Latin America.

You have more AK 47 in Africa than pencils, do you ask why? Most people would point to bad leadership and not look at the true reason.

The west benefits from instability in Africa.

Million of dollars are stashed in European banks by African dictators supported by the west. If the west is honest why not block this money from coming here?

Late Mubutu had an island in France and stacked millions there, the French Government did nothing because the money is used to fund French individual and business needs.

Same for the UK, recently on the Internet I read about a Nigerian Governor that jumped bail after he was arrested with a huge amount of money in London; however his estate in London was estimated at over 20 Million Pounds.

Question: Why was this money allowed into the UK in the first instance? Can you quantify the financial benefits of this money to the UK economy? Would this money from the estate be returned to Nigeria?

Most of the richest European families where slave owners and their wealth was made from the sweat and blood of Africans.

The west have a moral obligation to fix Africa as the source of the problems emanated from our disrupting their life with our quest for riches and treasure.

Ask yourself where the founding fathers of Australia, America, and Canada legal immigrants?

The same force that pushed them from the their native countries to the new world are pushing Africans, Asians and Latinos to their own new world.

You are not wrong. But we must be cerful that we turn people away from our shores for the right reson. I read that some peple are strit away are using the black and white thing in there answers. This is all they have. I was not around when Africans were being used to further my counrty. In my job in London i work with Aficans and have no problem with them earning money ,paying taxes and going back to a better life for there famliy which they leave behind for months even years at a time. It is countries like India and Pakistan that come here settle down and bring their whole family here and dodge VAT payments on their buisnesses and then change schooling system to suit them.We should worry about they don't go home and they never become Brittish always support there contry until it dosent suit them.My answer has nothing to do with race but with loyalty come here and be Brittish or go home.

I think that it's about time! Europeans have f*cked up the world for centuries. You came to America and Australia and wiped out millions of Native people, tried to take over and colonize Africa and Asia, and now you're complaining! I hope and pray for the day of the destruction of European culture, it would only be fair, because Europeans have destroyed so many unique and great cultures. PS: I'm not saying that present day Europeans are bad, but come on! Your ancestors were nothing but racist, adventurous, thieves!

The African's are forced to do it. They are fleeing from wars, political fears and famine.
Europe can cope with it. You see there is whats like a balance in economy. When someone comes here they don't really take someone's job, because when they get a job the money they spend, on food, taxes, rent is going back into the economy and basically creating a job. What effects the balance is things like education. Europe does need to work hard to try and house these people and give them a chance in life.

It's really sad that thousands of people see no better option for themselves than to leave their homes and families behind and take their lives in their hands on these terrible crossings, only to be treated like scum when they get here.

Perhaps if rich countries were more serious about fair trade and not participating in corrupt dealings with dictators to rip off Africa, this problem wouldn't arise. If we are prepared to look on at chaos and tragedy in Africa, this is the (small) price we pay.

it might seem far off and inconsequential now but, Africans contributed to building d great cities in Europe and America.... so they deserve a piece of the cake.

on the other hand, while the white man or slavery may have contributed to the problems in Africa, its about time Africans take responsibility of their destiny....unite to get rid of the selfish and corrupt leaders, stop moaning, and sort themselves out.

but in the meanwhile, flee the war and poverty...everyone deserves a good life.

Sadly, most countries aren't doing anything to reinforce the borders of EU- only Finland and Spain are pouring resources in to border control.

It is unacceptable that a fifth of the so-called "economic refugees" perish while trying to reach European shores. EU needs labourers, and I do not see why we couldn't have recruiting IN Africa for short term work contracts, instead of waiting for them showing up on our beaches.
Then they'd be able to return and spend the wealth home.

The majority are economic migrants. They are paying huge sums of money to traffickers in order to jump on the bandwagon that is (excellent social welfare, housing etc.)Cant continue. G.B.& Ireland are swamped with them. I have no objections to people coming to work providing they are not hired as cheap labour, (not making any meaningful contribution to the economy)thus denying locals the opportunity to have jobs that pay an honest wage. Unfortunately this scenario is now rife.

no we cant but you cant blame people for wanting a better life for themselves and others around them .the problem as i see it is that we took everything we could from their countries years ago and never bothered to give anything back ,plus their is the problems of drought and dictatorship that adds to the poverty .ie the money we now give to help is not used properly by the ruling goverments to help the indiginous people and that they have internal conflicts that still havent been settled after hundreds of years .so the answer i dont know but the problem of mass migration cannot be left unattended by all the european goverments much longer .more help in their own countries to establish jobs homes health care etc maybe?
