I think Warren Bennet's post sums up the reason why Puerto Ricans have nothing to be ashamed of by being recognized as a nation - he is totally uneducated.
Oh and besides your question isn't really a clear question. Puerto Rico is a US commonwealth country. It is not a state.
And no the citizens don't pay income tax to the federal government unless they live and work within the US or other territories.
Puerto Rico is a very wealthy country - it is home to the largest pharmaceutical industry in the world, is the only place in the world where Coca Cola syrup is made, has the most profitable shopping mall in the US, is the best - most accurate forecasters of future demand by US mainlanders - test market for US consumer goods , produces the finest rums in the world - Don Q and Barcadi, invented the pina colda, serves the US military and NASA intelligence gathering systems - Arecibo, has the largest tuna processing and packing industry in the world at Mayaguese - all canned tuna consumed in the US basically comes out of there, has a university graduation rate higher than the US mainland, has more cars per capita than any state in the union... should I go on? Puerto Rico would more than hold its own as a State or independent country. The only reson why congress works the Puerto Rican lobby to maintain the commonwealth status is because the large drug makers will have to comply with federal guidelines in their manufacturing - additional costs, taxes etc would bankrupt most companies.

Puerto Rico is already a commonwealth and its been like so since 1951... now the question you should ask do you want it to become a state ... Puertorican citizens pay state sales and federal taxes just like u and me...

now warren just like there is low income puerto ricans there is white blacks Asians and others and because u say they're ghetto America doesn't need them?
I'm puerto rican and i don't fall in that category you have put ALL puerto ricans the people i know who come from PR come here to work and make money now but you re idea of corporate America is blocking your sense unfourtionally not everyone can work in an office and not everyone comes from wealthy families there fore no matter what race or what color they are there is always going to be low income people puerto rico being a Commonwealth, state or nothing at all. you worry about paying your taxes that the government will worry about the status of puerto Rico

Never. Look at it this way. How good could it be or what could it have that causes all the Boricua (ricans) to come up here? That place has nothing worth having. Even the tourism stinks. We have been staring at the low life who came to our country from there for years and why would a Country like ours adopt a foolish
and backward people? We dont need any Islands anyway. The people are stupid and have no intentions of bettering themselves.
Just look at the ones that are here. The answer is no. As you can see from history the only people who were interested in them were the Spanish. Then they left and never returned. And what was that? 1500 years ago? No. All they have done for the USA is depress wages and make more and more low income or I should say no income ghettos. Do we need more of that crap? Thats all they are is crap and the USA doesnt need anymore.
Who would be proud to say they are a part of the USA? Look at them! Look what they have done to our system. Welfare. Crime.
They wont even learn the language! They should be left right where they are and maybe one of the Countries in Africa will take care of them. Africa! Another story.

Warren and the person who publicly agreed with him fall into a category of special people known as racists. When you generalize and discriminate towards a whole group of people you demonstrate a few things, first of all you show to be ignorant and hardly educated, you also demonstrate a lack of regard and respect for others. People of Puerto Rican decent are not the only ones who contribute to crime in the US, they are not the only ones to use welfare or any other form of government aid. It is people like you who take from society, you like to dirty your mouth with hateful words as you try to place blame on others for things which you probably helped mess up. I cannot accept the insensitive remarks made here, they are extremely offensive to any person who is civilized. Educate yourself so that you may contribute to an educated discussion instead of being guilty of slander.

Warren is somewhat right, but puertorricans in the US are VERY different from the ones in the island. In fact, many of those so called puertorricans in the states get discriminated when they visit the island.

I think it is to the Peurto Ricans advantage , but they should have a vote on it to decide , both the americans in the US and Peurto Ricans in thier country.
