What is the situation with crimanal records and moving to canada? some sites say it a no no and others say that each circumstance is considered differently. My partner got in trouble and went to prison once when he was 19 and again when he was 20. He is now 32 and has not been in trouble since. each prison sentence was short. nothing to serious. How does it work it is a big fat no or is it there a chance it will be ok. We are not looking to get the wheels in motion for about another 2 years. Also he was offerd the chance of working in canada. again will this prevent him from doing it.

Since it has been over ten years since your partner was in prison, he may be able to get "deemed rehabilitated." This would only apply if the crime committed would be punishable IN CANADA by a maximum of ten years imprisonment. You'll have to go to the Criminal Code of Canada to figure that out. If you don't qualify as "deemed rehabilitated" you can apply for "individual rehabilitation." There is an application process for this. So the short answer is that is not a "big fat no" but it definitely complicates things. I would suggest starting with the Canada Immigration page and go from there. Good luck.

Depending on the type of crime committed, it may preclude him from being able to enter Canada, let alone get a work visa. If you are not planning on a move for another couple of years, the easiest way to be sure would be to contact Canadian Immigration directly. I know I cannot go into the U.S. because of things I did when I was 17, and I am 50 now. The U.S. does not recognize all pardons and Canada may be the same. Good luck.
