We've decided to go for a 40 or 42 inch screen and both plasma and LCD models are available. We are going to install Sky HD as well as we watch a lot of sport. I've heard that LCD is here to stay and that plasma will eventually disappear, a bit like the old Betamax videos did. I've also been told that Sony Corp. ONLY do LCD televisions now. Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated.

up to 42" lcd are far better. above this some people say plasma have a slight edge. if you intend gaming on it avoid plasma. the best on the market at present is the sony bravia range.

Hi there, here is a summary of LCD Versus Plasma. LCD TV's are cheaper to run than Plasma TV's and also (if the room you are using is bright) have better anti glare technology. Plasma TV's have the advantage of better viewing angles and also do overall have a better color accuracy. However, Plasma TV's can be susceptable to "burn-in" or "ghosting" whereby the pixel cells age too quickly causing an image to permanently etch on the glass panel. Overall they both have their advantages, so it depends on what you are using it for. I have an LCD Television and it works great for me.

Plasma will not disappear. The picture quality far surpasses that of LCD. The problem is plasma prices. If you can chug along another year or two on your CRT the plasmas in the 40 inch range should drop to a reasonable range.

Hi hedgey, try here for up-to-date info:

http://help.cnet.com/?tag=hd_ts

but you may have to use their search engine to norrow things down a bit.

But, if you can hold out, I read somewhere late last year (sorry, can't recall where), that new-generation CRT's (the old Cathode-Ray Tube) TV's are coming back with a vengeance and will out-perform plasmas AND LCD's with the new technology incorporated into them. Maybe cnet has this too....

ADDED: You should also take a look at here once you decided on a plasma, LCD, etc., for money-off codes:

but you'll need some patience to find what's best.

Liqiud Crystal Display LCD has a better picture and lasts longer than the 8 years that a gas powered Plasma does.

i have a 37 inch lcd which is amazing i was informed that to go bigger you need to go with plasma and then there was all the talk of them being phased out also was told thatif a plasma was left on with say a pause screen of a game or movie it can burn or damage the screen but picture wise any thing over 37 inch plasma is better

LCD is better apparently. we have LCD we did look at plasma but was told that any kind of permanent logo on a channel ie the sky sports logo would kinda burn onto the screen so even when you change channels you would still see the logo there for a while. it doesn't stay there permanently but it does linger around for a while

My neighbour has a plasma screen. The picture is very difficult to see in bright daylight. If its sunny he has to close the curtains to see it properly. My smaller LCD is far superior.
