From a purely evolutionary process, the egg containing a somewhat mutated proto-chicken came first. Concepts of such philosophical dilemmas are human creations and irrelevant to which actually appeared first.

My beliefs are atheistic/agnostic secular humanist with Buddhist leanings. (How's that for someone who fits into a narrow niche?)

According to Gernesis 1:24 God produced living creatures according to their kind on the 6th day so, the chicken came first.

The egg (laid by a creature almost identical yet genetically distinct from the modern chicken), then the chicken, then monotheism. Probably.
