I find it makes a difference depending on what I've just finished doing. I agree with J, particularly his point 2. Straight from playing a mmorpg it takes forever to shut down - and will often snarl up on the Norton software as it closes. I leave my comp to 'settle' for 5 mins (go to the loo or put the kettle on), then it's no bother. If I've just been working offline, then it's pretty quick to shut down. Plus - defrag regularly!

Ignore the above answers suggesting the msconfig and unchecking the startup items. These are idiots.

Startup and shut down are both completely seperate issues.

Possible causes for slow shut down are:
1) low memory
2) software or service taking a long time to quit
3) slow hard drive
4) slow processor
5) lack of hard drive defragmentation

Personally it sounds like either 1 or 2.

I have 4 WinXP PC's on my network and all of them are pretty quick to shut down. Ironically though, the slowest of them (866MHz processor with 512MB of 133MHz ram) is the fastest to shut down. My most powerful (1.8GHz processor 704MB DDR 333MHz ram) is the slowest to shut down and also boot up.

Try using Ccleaner, and run a spyware scan. Sp[yware can have this effect.

Start Regedit.

Navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SesssionManager\Memory Management

Select ClearPageFileAtShutdown from the list on the right.
Right click on it and select Modify.
Change the value to 0 to disable.

if the value is already 0 dont touch it, it is not the problem

if you dont know what you are doing then dont bother as going into the registry can really mess your PC up.
Reboot your computer

Believe me PLEASE - I have tried the msconfig story and as J said it is HIT!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE do not listen to people telling you that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I cannot give you advice as I am scared I might give wrong advice. What I WILL say is things that have impact on the pc's speed are exactly what J says. I have tried all the things people have said here in answers and ultimately I discovered I had VIRUSES. I formatted my hard drive, re-installed all my software, installed my Tweaks )I am a TWEAK fan) and my pc is running MUCH MUCH better!! TOO many unnecessary programs have an affect. Then you think you have uninstalled them, but BOY THE REGISTRY does not always clean all!!!!!!!!!!!!!
