Yes, it is. using a good size punching bag helps with both the punching and kicking.
it's just good practice to use some kind of punching bag to improve technique and stamina among other things.
if not a punching bag, I would check into a B.O.B or Body Opponent Bag due to it's realistic look of a person with it's added ability to be adjusted to several different height settings.
it adds more realism for striking as opposedd to a regular punching bag, but it is considerably harder since its made of molded rubber other than canvas or vinyl as most punching bags are made of but still good for a Martial Arts enthusiast.

Go to his dojo and ask the instructors.. My son has been doing it for 5 years.. He has lot's of equipment. It can be purchased online. A punching bag(you mean the one that hangs from a chain?). Is okay as long as it's low enough for low kicks. Personally the standing punching bags you can buy at Big 5 are excellent. There are several hand held bags too.. Not sure you want to hold them while he kicks.. lol.. Good luck!

in my opinion it is an asset particularly standing ones as you can practice kicking at all height ranges. i have a black belt in tkd and find that a standing punch bag is useful or one which hangs from a chain because you can still set the bracket at the height which is useful for him. www.bytomic.com is a big martial arts online store which has a large range of equipment. hope this is of any help

A punching bag is usefull for taekwondo, because it helps you practise your punching and kicking. Dont ever think that its not. Also if u wanted a present from your boyfriend you should ask him for jewlery if your into it. Or if your a tomboy like i am, ask for something to do with the sport u like, but u shouldnt mention it like ---> " for my birthday i want...". Say it casualy like " ya i really like those.... i really want one of those... or something!

I'm not an expert on bags, but get a hanging bag and hang it properly, not from a stand. Freestanding bags break too easily and stands get in the way.

Yes. For his home, the freestanding bag might be better, although they can be kicked over, which is an annoyance. If you get him a hanging bag, get the water filled type.

Any equipment for training to fight would be helpful. Although you may just want to give a gift certificate to the martial artist, and one for me too!
