I need something we can make with material you would find at home and it can be any kind of instrument.

fill an empty paper towel, or toilet paper holder with rice and close up on both sides using construction paper or fabric. seal the sides wtih a rubber band.
very simple and probably wont cost any money!

How about a drum! Use an empty coffee can and cover with construction paper to make it pretty! Grab a wooden or plastic spoon and bang away at it!
Or Chimes. Color a paper towel or toilet paper tube and pokes small holes through one end of the tube. Cut a few pieces of string all different sizes and put through holes. add shells, etc (anything that makes noise when hit together) and you have chimes.
A rain stick can be made with a long tube (paper towel tube works good, or a poster tube is usually a little stronger). Stick short straight pins, or even hammer in some small nails. Cover one end. Pour in some hard beads or seeds, different sizes and weights are good for variety, not too big though, has to fit through all the pins sticking through. Cover up the other end and slowly turn your stick over.

A great instrument to make for a 3rd grader would be a rainmaker... if you have no idea what that might be its basically a paper tube, rice and toothpicks. the toothpicks are places through the tube to make a crisscross patterns in the tube. One end of the tube is then sealed and the dry rice is put inside. and the other end is sealed. your daughter will have fun making and decorating this....

How about a drum? You would need a coffee can and some sort of material that can be secured tightly over the top.
Another idea is to use some sort of box and rubberbands to make something guitar like.

Maybe you make make shakers. Roll a piece of construction paper up then add a bottom. Fill it 1/4 full or more withs beans and add a top. Shake it all you want!

simple,
wire hanger = triangle
cofee can + construction paper+ rubber bands = drum
empty glass jug = hobo's whistling jug
rubber bands + popsicle Sticks = guitar type thing
2 spoons = the spoons, yep, just like curly from the 3 stooges.
