I presume you mean voodoo dolls.

It's called the placebo effect. Psychologically, if I tell you I'm going to kick your head tomorrow, and you are inclined to believe me because I am an important part of your community, your body will respond to fear.

Voodoun priests are like the standard clergymen/woman of their towns/villages. They are a figure of authority and respect. So if they made a clay doll and told you "when I stick a pin in this dolls head, you'll feel it", you'd feel it. It's psychological. You don't actually feel it, you just think you do, because somebody has told you that you will.

Another example is placebo drugs. A man goes into a doctors surgery complaining of stomach cramps. The doctor gives him a pill. The patient knows that the doctor is a well qualified professional, so he takes the pill, and immediately begins to feel better.
The pill was actuallty a tictac. The man felt better because he subconsciously thought "the doctor has helped me, I must feel better now", so his body began to stop the pain. It's the placebo effect.

Voo Doo dolls are myth invented by Christian missionaries to demonise practitioners of African traditional faiths.
The dolls thing actually comes from Germanic witchcraft in the dark ages and has nothing to do with Voo Doo.

Voo Doo was "invented" by Africans, because Africa has not many resources,Africans fought for these resources.Witch Doctors said that by throwing a dall that looked like a person in vinegar and after that in ash,the dall becomes life-like.Sooo,Africans shot 'em and crushed 'em and(it is said)that the person that simbolized the dall faced the same things. It's just a story though.

That's Voodoo. Read about voodoo magic and decide for yourself. It's way too complex to explain in a few paragraphs.
