The surah is called the poets and it was reveled to answer the non belivers, you can be a poet and enjoy poetry it is NOT FORBIDDEN but it was an answer to why prophet Muhammed couldn't possibly be a poet but that he is a prophet.
First of all, this sura is from the holy quran not prophet Muhhamd's (PBUH) saying.
Second you got the sura wrong! it says "
[26:224] As for the poets, they are followed only by the strayers.
[26:225] Do you not see that their loyalty shifts according to the situation?
[26:226] And that they say what they do not do?
[26:227] Exempted are those who believe, lead a righteous life, commemorate GOD frequently, and stand up for their rights. Surely, the transgressors will find out what their ultimate destiny is.
God reveled this surah to answer the non belivers who said that muhhamed (pbuh) is only a poet and he wrote down to quran. Poet where known to be influential in that time and people belived what they said and where mesmerized by it. So in this surah god is answering the non belivers to why muhammed is not a poet but he is a messenger from God.
Reasons:
1) poets say why they do not do
2) in one poem they may compliment the sultan (leader) but with hidden meanings about the bad thing about that sultan just to get money, poets where highly paid. THus they lie to get what they want.
YOU HAVE TO truley dive in the teaching of islam and research on your own to have your own thoughts on any subject in isalm, then and then only you would appreciate it.

the translations above are not accurate. "and the poets are followed by the astray people. didn't you see that they are roaming in every valley. and that they are saying what they don't do. except for who believed, did good deeds, remembered god a lot and defended themselves after being oppressed, and the oppressors will know which place they will turn to". (26: 224-227)
we should remember that Arabic poetry is a very powerful political media until now. it's clear that you have been misled, only bad poets are attacked. music has never been mentioned in Koran.

26:224 As for the poets, the erring ones follow them
26:225 See you not that they speak about every subject(praising people- right or wrong) in their poetry
2:226 And that they say what they do not do
I don't know where you got that awful translation.
I am not qualified to answer this but I can refer to a site:

However, one must take this into context. This is the mistake many people make. Just read the next two verses and I think it will make alot more sense. There is caveat against because they praise evil-doers. The verse does not say anything about books or musicians. I think it was a bit unfair to lie.

The poets; to be read along with the exceptions mentioned in verse 227 below. Poetry and other arts are not in themselves evil, but may, on the contrary e used in the service of religion and righteousness. But there is a danger that they may, be prostituted for base purposes. If they are insincere ( "they say what they do not" ) or are divorced from actual life or its serious purpose, they may become instruments of evil or futility. Then they wonder about without any set purpose, and seek the depths, valleys, of human folly rather than the heights of divine light.

First of all, Muhammad didn't give this advice. It was God who gave this advice. Muhammad was the messenger.
Secondly, you misinterpret it. There is nothing wrong with poetry, music and writing. But there is something wrong with FOLLOWING and IDOLIZING writers, music artists and poets, which is what the verse is saying. Think outside the box.

That sounds like he was talking about fiction writers and poets and music about other teachings. I am a Christian and I wish I could understand the Bible fully. Sometimes you just have to go on faith. What this advise means to you may not mean the same to someone else. Neither may be wrong or right. Who knows? If you are an ex- Muslim, What faith/religion are you now?

Oh,you again...stop putting your poison everywhere....
He meant those poets and musicians, who speak to weak hearts, and make people away from God’s way by weakening their hearts and make them love this evanescent life and forget the reason they are living for:building the earth, and worshipping God to win the after life....
He did not reject all kinds of poetry,He encourged Hassan Ibn Thabet’s poetry,He liked some poets who came before Islam like Antar Al-Abssy,and Zuhair Ibn Abi-Sulma....
Ah,by the way,why didn’t get rid of the copy of the Quran you had?you changed your mind?I think you had never been a muslim ,and by the way,I do not know future, but I feel you’re gonna have a bad end...just a feeling...

First of all do not make your status as an ex muslim so open because u are likely to be murdered according to islamic shariah. Now coming to this hadith, music and poetry which tells you to do wrong stuff is certainly haram. Music can drive you away from reality as far as i have noticed. I listen to music and all this time i know that i am committing a sin.

If you are an ex muslimah, why do you need to know. Obviously you dont follow Islam so what interest is it to you. Surely if you ever where a Muslim you would know the answer without having to ask. Wouldn't you? Also if you are an ex muslim would you not know how to spell Muhammad (PBUH) at the very least?
