I woke up Friday morning with a raging sore throat. As the day progressed I felt worse and worse. Body aches...fever etc. So I went to the doctor on Saturday and was told I tested postive for strep. The doctor gave me a 10 day prescription of amoxicillin. Now my question is this: How long do the symptoms remain after you start taking the amoxicillin? I do not think I have ever in my life had such severe pain in my throat! It is so hard to swallow and I have not had a full nights sleep in two days now. I am manging my fever alternating between tylenol and ibuprofen. I have taken three amoxicillin caps so far, which equals to one day.

Hi Jmiah17,
Let me tell you something about Strep throat; It is caused by streptococcal bacteria. You may be infected from someone else has this bacteria by sneezing or coughing or even sharing their tools for drinking or eating. It often starts suddenly with a sore or tonsils. It is very common, there are lots of patients diagnosed with it. Try to not spread strep to others.( use some tissue ) because it is easily spread.
I am sure this make you suffer many times especailly of swollen throat that is make you sometimes unable to eat or swallow or even drink. Along with other symptoms like fever and headache.

After taking antibiotics, You should feel better within 2 to 3 days.
Now, You have to take antibiotic with antipyritic ( for fever) along with analgesic ( for pain). All these in order to short course of your illness.
Full 10 days of taking Antibiotic ( Penicillin like Amoxicillin) is necessary to make sure that it eradicates the infection.
If you have experience that there is no benefit of taking Amoxicillin, let your doctor know that. Then he will switch you to another antibiotic. Because the bacteria sometimes become resistant to antibiotic.
Usually Amoxicillin dose is;
if it is mild to moderate infection; 500 mg Orally every 12 hours OR 250 mg orally every 8 hours.
if it is severe infection; 875 mg orally every 12 hours.
Ibuprofen good for fever; 200 to 800 mg orally every 6 to 8 hours as needed.
However, Follow the directions and the doses that your doctors prescribe for you.

Now, What should you do?
Take rest and don't smoke.
Drink a lot of warm water. Avoid cold drink.
you can gargle with one teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water.
Try to make a warm soup with no spicy at all.
There is something important DON'T use your toothbrush. Try to buy a new one.

I'm so sorry for being sick. I hope you will be alright soon.
If you have any further questions, feel free to email me.
Take care of yourself!

A Strep throat infection lasts about week with or without an antibiotic. The antibiotic doesn't really make that much difference in the symptoms. But what you have may not be a Strep infection. I suggest you return to your doctor and request a rapid Strep test, or RST. It's done in-office and takes 10-20 minutes to get a result. If the results are negative, insist on a throat culture to confirm a negative diagnosis. There's a possibility that what you have is viral.

Well regarding the top answer...you shouldn't be drinking warm things. And you should be drinking cold things. I just went to the doctor today because I have strep and Ive had it for three days now before properly getting tested. All I've been doing is drinking warm teas. Wrong move. Cold things reduce swelling. Along with drinking cold things and the antibiotics you should feel back to normal within 24-36 hours. And that's a professional answer :P get the antibiotics and a large slushie from sonic and you should feel sooo much better by the next day.

Normally you would have relief in 48 hours. Don't forget to finish your prescription. Don't stop taking the antibiotics when the pain stops because the infection is not completely gone. If the pain persists on the third day contact the doctor and get a stronger prescription.

Know the asteroid wellhead tonsil stones them for many years and it's been title not eventually.

Best decision I've ever made! I was shocked by the way of getting out the stones out. It was so easy, but more importantly, painless. I really liked the little trick he had for preventing gag reflex. He have one happy customer here.
