Hi, i understand this must be a very hard time, i am a veterinary nurse and would like to put your mind at rest. Your dog will not feel any pain whilst being put to sleep. it basically is an overdose of anaesthetic, so they just fall asleep.
I hope this helps, this is the kindest thing you can do.

The only thing she might feel is the stick of a little needle. Have a family member with her when she goes. Please don't leave her to die with strangers. Tell her everything is going to be fine and she will feel better soon. It's never a good idea to keep them around just for your own sake. She is OLD and doesn't need to suffer when you already know what's coming. It's the best thing you can do for her now to keep her from pain. I pray that good memories will replace your grief quickly. I always go and adopt a new dog right away, knowing that it will help me get over it faster and I am giving a poor dog a home AND always remember that the new pet can never take the place of a previous one. Give it a chance to be it's own self and never expect more than it can be. You have been given some wonderful advice here and we all hate to see you and your family go through this awful time. Be blessed.

I'm so sorry for you my dog was put to sleep a few months ago and its very quick and does not cause pain she has lIved along time and sometimes doing the right thing for your best friend is the hardest i watched my jazz suffer with ill health and it just got worse and she could no longer walk but when i took her to the vets it was the hardest thing ive ever had to do and hopefully the last but that was what i had to do for her the only thing i could do to ease her pain and suffering they shaved a little bit of hair on her leg so they could get a vein and they put the needle in and i held her while she left this world it was 5 seconds and she passed away it was very peaceful for her but very painful for me again I'm sorry for you and my thoughts are with you

I am sorry that your dog is sick. It's hard to lose a pet. It sounds as though she is in pain right now. When they give the dog the medicine that puts it to sleep the dog will relax and fall asleep aside from the pin prick the animal will not feel it. It will go to sleep and up and away to doggie heaven...

A few months ago. I had to put my dog to sleep, he suffered a kidney failure. It was very hard for the whole family to accept that Buddy (that was his name) had to be put to sleep. The injection that is given, puts the dog to sleep and the dosage is so high that eventually his heart stops. I am sorry I am telling all these sad details, but you have to know. We all still remember Buddy, he had become part of our family.

-ask your vet to give her an injection to make her go to sleep first a sleeping med,not the actual euthanization, then after she is asleep let him do the euthanization, she wont feel anything. my friends poodle was about this age and also could no longer walk its time and I know how hard this is.......... and make sure u dont drop her off and leave her alone to have this done this is the time in a dogs life it needs its owner the most...........................

You must be very sad to see this happen to the pet you love and it will be hard to let her go but you really must do what's best for Tootsie. She will only feel the prick of the needle.

No. They are usually sedated, then given an overdose of a medication to stop the heart. The worst pain is what we feel.
