tho i don't smoke myself (stopped 3 years ago) i think that it is a fundamental part of the pub culture.
i often get up & move away from friends that are smoking as i cant breath (literally) or am feeling a little bit sick, the reason i do this is cos i used to smoke with them & would tell anyone who complained about the smoke to "sod off out of it then!".
on the other hand i feel that the government is stepping over the line on this one as they are bending us to their will more & more every day. and that they arent worried about the fact that the pub industry is going to suffer as this will give us less & less places where we can go to meet & socialise.
Once we all stay in our hutches on the pc all the time they will have almost complete control of our lives.
it wont be too long before questions like this will be filtered out.

The smoking ban has been in place in Scotland for some time now. Even though i am a smoker it actually makes the whole experience more pleasant. a lot of pubs here have added outdoor smoking areas with heaters, you no longer have to go home smelling strongly of smoke after a night out.
i haven't noticed pubs becoming any quieter since and there seems to be an increase in people having meals and bringing their family to the pub.
most people here; smokers and non smokers have been very positive about the ban.

I live in an area where there is a ban. I also lived in Ireland for a while when there was a ban. It will slow things up a bit but one will NEVER keep people out of pubs. Smaller pubs will inevitably end up closing. However, I think the ban works well and I enjoy a smoke free atmosphere. I just nip out for a ***.

The bar owners here in Toronto were really up in arms when the smoking ban when into effect. It didn't turn out to have that much of an affect on their business. Smokers can step outside for a smoke if they want it, and the atmosphere inside is much better. It's turned out to be a plus all round. The staff like it much better too, they don't go to work to die from second hand smoke.

It hasn't made much difference to the pub I work in , people just go to the beer garden and smoke. In reply to roachy's answer we have been told if a customer lights up in the pub we are not to serve them any drinks and if they refuse to go outside the police are to be called. (Scotland) We have never had a problem since the ban came in here last year. By the way I'm a smoker.

Im from Ireland where the smoking ban is already in effect, i have to say as a smoker i tend to go out less socially than i did before the ban. gone are the days where you can relax and have a drink and a puff in your favourite local. i find standing out in the rain shivering bugs me! its overall effect on pubs hasnt been to bad, as they are still packed however when it was first introduced a lot of the small rural pubs closed down citing the ban lowering their turnover

well, personally i just wont go to the pub anymore, nor will my wife, and we know lots of people who feel the same. gone are the days when you could pop into the the pub after a hard days works for a beer and a ciggie! we dont go for meals either - so I think that the pub industry will suffer, maybe not a great deal but i`m sure that some will struggle.

Look what has happened in Ireland. Pubs closing down, off licence sales up by 20%, the whole social fabric of a country has changed. On a positive note meeting people at the smokers corner has become the new way of getting a date. So it is not all bad.

i think it will harm the industry.whatever happened to freedom of choice,as an ex smoker myself ,i think it should be in the landlords hands,if he wants a smoke free pub that's fine, then he puts a sign up outside to say this is a non smoking pub.we all then know what to do.
in food areas and restaurants, the landlord or the owner should do the same thing.
in this day with modern air conditioning it is not such an issue.
some of the smoke filled pubs you used to go in,are not around these days.and most of the refurbished bars restaurants have air con.

Here in Scotland it has already happened. It is great for non-smokers like myself. I have not heard any smokers really complaining about it, and many of them have quit because of it. It was predicted it will save 1200 lives a year whcih is not a bad thing eh? I also noticed that the pubs are busier. The only people who will be complaining are the tobacoo industry.
