When you go to a lab to get some blood tests, what do they do with the blood after they have used it?

Most laboratories keep blood samples for several days in case additional testing is needed. At the conclusion of the specified retention time, blood samples are treated as medical waste and disposed of accordingly. Some lucky samples receive extended life as control samples if there was a particularly interesting result associated with that specimen.
