This is slightly gory, but having seen all the pictures of Saddam being hanged, I'm wondering how the actual knot is made. Can anyone enlighten me?

Not without drawing a diagram, but basically it is a double loop at the noose end, then wound back up, and the rope end threaded and tightened through the loop end.
