It will take at least 4 weeks for the tablets to start working, during which time he may even feel worse. Common side effects are increaded anxiety, mood swings, tiredness, loss of libido. Once the body is used to the tablets then these side effects should pass, but if after being on them for a while and he feels no better, or worse, it may be worth trying a different tablet. There are many different types out there and they all work differently. The tablets wont cure the depression though, just help get your mood up a bit so that you can do something about it.

There tends to be an increase in suicide rate within the first few weeks of starting anti-depressants so it is very necessary to keep a close eye on him. The medication however needs time to build up in the body before it can take full effect. It can be a long process.

Most health professionals would consider a trial of 2 weeks with any antidepressants to be the minimum period. By their nature, most antidepressants require at least a fortnight before they start working.
Yes, it is possible to recover from major depression and return to full functioning life with appropriate care and support and many people have.
Hang in there, it is a tough road for you both.
Good luck.

Hi there, I had depression for 4 years. and it's hard, and thank god there are still wonderful spouses like you to be there for him through this hard time.
Depression cannot be cured 100% by medication only... support is needed, constant. Once the drugs kick in, it changes the chemical balance in his head, but it may not change the way he has been use to. He may forget why he wanted to kill himself. But that won't fix his lazyness. He needs motivation. To see the light at the end of the tunnel (so to speak). Remind him of who he was before the depression, and why you fell in love with him in the first place. Your support will increase his recoveration time emmensly...Depression can make people feel worthless. They may judge themselves harshly and find fault with everything about themselves, from their appearance to their job to their thoughts and feelings. You can remind your loved one about his or her positive qualities and how much he or she means to you and others. Also,Depression steals away motivation, energy and interest. Ask your loved one to join you on a walk, for a movie, or to work on a hobby or other activities he or she previously enjoyed. But don't try to force him or her into doing something. If your loved one is in treatment for depression, help him or her remember to take prescribed medications and to attend therapy appointments.
And don't forget about yourself.... make sure you help yourself through this difficult time.
Your husband is very lucky...... to have someone so great. To even go on a chat thing to ask for help..
I applaud you...

There is no simple answer. It varies massively from person to person. Some people are completely cured after just a few months, some people take years, and some never get over it. One month sounds a bit optimistic, but it is possible.
