When my dog came in from outside today, he had a large cut in between his legs. It almost looks like a glass cut or a stab wound. I do not have a lot of money, and was wondering if I could just clean w/ peroxide and use an anti-biotic ointment, or do I need to take him to the vet? The wound doesn't seem to be bothering him that much, he just licks it occasionally.

Dont use peroxide. If the wound is clean and isnt gapeing or huge i wouldnt worry too much just use betadine or some other sort of iodine based liquid. Just keep an eye on it and if it bleeds or the skin around it feels really hot(infection) then take him to the vet.

if he licks it, it means it IS bothering him. you should most definitely take him to the vet, since you said its a large cut. if you just leave it like that, it might develop an infection and probably a pass. my chi had a wound about a month ago and my parents told me that it would just recover on its own but i insisted on taking him to the vet's. the vet told me that it was a very smart decision. anyway, hope he gets well soon. =)

If you love your dog take him to the Vet. If he is licking the wound it is bothering him. The longer you leave it the worse it may get, especially if he is licking it.

I don't know how big the cut is, if it's minor perhaps you can try calling the vet. The receptionist/clinic assistant should be able to dispense free advice, esp what cleaning solution would be pet-friendly.

I understand if you don't have much money but the cut could get infected or it could be deeper than you thought. At least phone the vet to ask his opinion.

If it is not deep enough for stiches then you should be able to tend to it yourself, but if you are going to put any kind of salve on it then you need to bandage it so he doesn't lick it.Maybe you could only put it on him when he is sleeping. It will also need to get air in order for it to heal quicker so dont keep it bandaged all the time. Good Luck.

Take your dog to the vet a.s.a.p. if you care about it. If you leave it too long it will only get worse and cost you more money. The vet will be sympathetic with regards to your financial status.

Just write on Yahoo Answers, that should help more than cleaning the wound.
