hmmm, as far as I understand, Asian culture of SE Asia, which i do have an understanding of, is NOTHING like Iraqi culture.
I don't know how old you are, but I remember the Vietnam war. It was NOT the same as Iraq. This war is NOT the Vietnam of this generation.

I guess that the USA has not learned from Vietnam since Bush and Cheney never were in that war. Cheney had quite a few deferments while Bush - well, there is something clouding about his not finishing in the reserves - mmmmmmmmmmm. Apparently, he did drink a bit at that time.
58,000 kids died in Vietnam while at least 3000 in Iraq and this has nothing to do with the "War on Terror". That is in Afganistan looking for Osoma and beating back the Taliban, not Iraq.
I think it is oil or just trying to dominate a country except it just is not working out. Remember "Mission Accomplished". I don't think so.
Vietnam, the US was fighting the boogeyman called "communism" which still flourishes there today and the US is now a Vietnam buddy?? Go figure that one.

Probably the better question would be "Is America going to learn anything from 9/11?" Vietnam taught us one major lesson, i.e., that you can't pacify a backward nation that has no desire to be free. In this regard, Iraq is like Vietnam. It has also taught us that you can't win by adopting the brutal tactics of the enemy. It also taught us that asymmetric warfare is the only way the enemy can even have a chance at defeating the US. It also taught us that there is a limit to the American people's patience with the way any war is being conducted. It would appear that we are, again, on the wrong side of history in what we are doing in Iraq. However, without standing up to the Islamic radicals somewhere in their own backyard, we risk a scourge the likes have never been seen before. Iraq is as good as place as any to set a price that muslims will pay to allow muslim's to practice terror in the name of allah. Iraq is our Sherman's march to the sea, only more humanely done.

Yawn, yeah Vietnam blah blah blah. This is why I talk to kids to not join the military, don't serve your country. Too many people do not have the stomach for a war we need to win and will just end up comparing you to Vietnam and before you know it they are spitting at you in airports and calling you baby killer. Better just to be a business person, screw over everyone you can and make all the money you can. Then convert your assets to diamonds or something else you can trade later and move with your wealth somewhere else. I vote for Australia. Let all the no blood for oil folks deal and suffer under attacks by radical Islam. Come to think of it, how many liberals died on 9/11 and why are we fighting to defend a liberal bastion like NYC.

Liberals WANT Iraq to be another Vietnam. Some of the more radical ones do, anyway -- they hate America and the American military that much.
Former NVA officers are on published record as saying that the anti-war movement in America helped them immensely in terms of resolve and morale.
The same thing is happening with the "insurgents" and the anti-war movement of today.

The same question will be asked with the addition of the word Iraq in twenty years. The defense contractors will always need a place to try out their weapons of we don't care who we kill. The sons and daughters of the survivors of this war in Iraq will be the fodder.

Vietnam and the war on terror cannot be compared. The Vietnam war was handed to us by the French failures. The war on terror was handed to us by the Islamic radicals that blew up the towers. Vietnam was a country. The war on terror is a global issue. There is one way they are similar, the negative press from the biased media has had an influence on the results.

I don't really know. Truth is, I think Americans HAVE learned from Vietnam, and have been trying hard NOT to repeat it.
Apparently, George Bush skipped a history lesson or two along with skipping other things. And of course, I'm sure it helped that....at least from what I've read thus far....there always seemed to be someone walking behind him with a roll of toliet paper and one of those kitty-litter scoopers.....

There are plenty of similarities between the V war and the I war
Both were started on US lies
Both were a result of US medling in other nation's business
Both we claimed we were winning after years of war
Both were stated with mental cases from Texas in the WH
Both losses were the result of a coventional military trying to fight an insurgency.
Both billions were made by infuential USA military contractors

We value our American way of life more than we value the lives of our fellow Americans. As a former soldier and wife of a current soldier I know how easy it is ti get swept up in patriotism. But we have no right to have preemptive wars, they never turn out right, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq.....
