Shiva in Sanskrit means 'Eternity' or Time and Linga means the 'Lukkaita Anga' or the concealed part of the body. It is worshipped on top of Nature which represents female energy.
It is actually the worship of Time and Space, the two tyrants that rule the universe. We the human beings are its product: We are Time and Space both. Our life is the time span and the physical body with life force is the space capable of growth, decay, and death.

I firmly believe religions are created by people, good people, who wanted to give direction to people. The religion provide a framework under which everybody could co exist happily. The religion maker had to do a balancing act where every aspect which keeps the life going is understood and protected. Obviously this life giving organ has its important and this may have been the chosen way to let everybody know its important. It is also possible that the religion makers may have been divided in there views, ideas and approaches just like the scientific community is sometime divided on some aspects. A particular group must have thought this to be the most important thing in human life and hence came up with such concept. Obviously it will be all speculation either mine or somebody else.

Often the Ling or Linga , carved in stone, is placed nearby another carving of Yuni(the female genitals) thus symbolising fertility. In TantricHindu practices, the genitals of live males and females are ritually revered.

have you gone into a shiv temple and had a good look at the entire shivlinga area? whatever is inside us is shown there. what do you see there? the shivling and the yoni, representing the cosmic male female. then the three rods on the sides above which is placed a pot with a hole it. through the hole, milk is falling on the shivling drop by drop.
now imagine inside yourself. the base is the kundalini energy encircled by the serpant.the three rods are the three chords(nadis), the pot is crown chakra through which the nectar is dripping down on the kundalini. your body is not getting the nectar, it will get the nectar only when the kundalini awakens and moves up the central nadi to the top of the pot(crown). i feel the nectar as my kundalini is awake.

Possibly because, that is their belief like God is ours. Take time to read about the Hindu religion. As a Priest I like to read about others beliefs as I feel then, one can understand and hopefully communicate better with others in the world as we should.
